Good value

I bought these chisels about a year ago, once sharpened and honed with a descent shod they hold a fairly good edge. I think some of the comments previously left are unfair because you dont buy something like these for £40 and expect a set worth £200. A good set for the price.

Lower quality than my (low) expectations

Having read the reviews, I expected to get decent blades, good steel, and having to turn new handles, sharpen and perhaps some regrinding to modify the angle of the bevel.
But I was disappointed.
Whatever producer Axminster is sourcing these toolsfrom is, or perhaps since the last reviews has become, extremely sloppy.
The v tools are ground badly off center, meaning you will have a very hard time sharpening them.
V tools are a pretty specific carving tool, so you are basically stuck having to buy one or two somewhere else.
The other blades are ground with a pretty steep angle and not to well, but patience and a grinder can fix that.

As I said, I expected to have to turn my own handles. However, after all the tools do come with handles, so it seems to be fair to comment on them, and the finish, too.
If you are planning on buying this as a present, my advice is to steer clear of it, you and the recipent will both be much better off.
The handles were seemingly glued and finished by somebody in great hurry. The finish is uneven and sticky. The glue they used splattered all over the shanks and blades. We are talking hard stuff, it need some serious sanding or light grinding to remove from the metal.
I think the right price for this tools would be 20 pounds or so, given what I received.
Chinese producers are perfectly able to produce high quality stuff, as many axminster products show, but I suspects they are also prone to gradually dropping quality and cut corners after the first batches.

Axminster Carving Set

Got mine for Christmas. Once sharpened they are fine, handles aren't brilliant but they are perfectly functional. Read some previous reviews where concerns were raised about sharpness, as you need to re hone any chisels/gouges/knives are about 1 hour of use its important to purchase suitable sharpening kit to go with them (I purchased a Flexcut slip shod and also made strops using ply wood and leather). Blades seem to hold an edge quite well so the steel must be ok.

Good in parts!

Nice blades let down badly by poor handles.

The quality of the handles is poor and fitting of ferruls is a joke.

When buying these I had intended making and fitting my own handles anyway (rather large hands require larger than standard handles) and I don't like London pattern handles, they are fine for wacking with a mallet but for prolonged holding are uncomfortable after a while.

Would probably be better sold unhandled so users can fit their own.
