For wood - Totally Useless!

They may be useful for stone, but for wood these are totally useless in my honest opinion. They are far, far too coarse to be of any use whatsoever. They cannot be controlled properly and leave massive tears in any timber. Having since gone on to use proper well made wood rifflers (and paying well for them I'll admit), My advice would simply be that these are completely inappropriate for wood use, and Axminster should make this clear, as they are a really good company, but not doing themselves any favours with this product.

Perfect for stone carving!

Maybe too coarse for wood, but these riflers are ideal for stone carving

I find these very useful for stock removal in small fiddly spaces. Yes they leave a bit of a rough finish but that's why God gave us sandpaper.

8 Piece Riffler Ser

Having been recently introduced to simple woodcarving I was pleased to see that Axminster did a Riffler set of files. On receipt I was extremely disappointed in them because they are so coarse and fierce that they tear the woodgrain apart. The result is more akin to a using very rough file on a delicate skin. I tried to reduce the heavy bite into the wood by diamond filing some of the needle sharp points off the teeth without any improvement. They catch very easily and it is impossible to make fine, controlled and gentle, smoothing cuts cuts. I really cannot imagine what type of wood carving they would be suitable for. Look for a set that has a similar cut to metal files. I have put these back in there packaging at the back of the drawer.
