In Detail

Package consists of Axminster Hobby Series AWVSL1000 Woodturning Lathe and Axminster Woodturning SK100 Starter Kit Chuck Package.

Axminster Hobby Series AWVSL1000 Woodturning Lathe
Four major features set this lathe apart: 1. The centre height is a full 185mm giving a massive 370mm(14") maximum turning diameter over the bed and the ability to turn larger diameter bowls without the need to rotate the head. 2. The distance between centres is a very useful 1,100mm for turning longer spindles and similar items. 3. The swivelling headstock is also free to slide along the length of the bed, giving the facility to position the head in the most convenient position to suit the item being turned. The headstock can also be swivellled. 4. A larger motor to match the larger capacites. The AWVSL1000 is a powerful value-for-money machine with plenty of capacity and is now supplied with a pair of Axminster centres. Supplied with 4 prong Axminster drive centre, Axminster revolving tailstock centre, 150mm faceplate, outboard tool rest extension, 300mm tool rest and stand.
N.B. The distance between centres will vary and be dependent on the type of centres or accessories used.

Axminster Woodturning SK100 Starter Kit Chuck Package.
100mm diameter chucks, made in Axminster, are the result of more than 30 years of experience in the manufacture of woodturning chucks and accessories. This latest version uses CNC production techniques to ensure your chuck is as accurate and reliable as possible. The stainless steel chuck body including the thread is a single piece, maximising concentricity and minimising vibration during use. The chuck features our SafetyJaw accessory mounting jaws which have rounded corners and includes a chuck key. Packed into a strong plastic storage box, this starter set includes a set of dovetail jaws (size C), a matching faceplate ring and a screw chuck. The set gives you plenty of scope from mounting blanks for initial turning to final completion of another well executed project.

Great First Time Lathe With The Chuck Kit

I purchased this lathe a few months ago now so have been able to turn a few projects off all varieties to put the lathe through its paces. I think this can only make a fair review, however I have never used another lathe so can give no comparison.

The advice and help I got from the local store was excellent, second to none. Bought several other items and we agreed on a package price, so first class service there.

My main issue with service came from the delivery. It was supposed to go out on the heavy service on their own van where they would deliver and place it in the workshop for me to put together. Head office sent an email to say it had been dispatched on TNT, meaning the driver drops it on your driveway and it is up to you to sort out. Luckily my neighbor had just finished work and he helped me lift all the parts through the house and into the workshop. I was expecting something a lot heavier. If you can comfortably lift a bag of spuds or cement then this shouldn't be too much problem.

Assembly was very easy, all together in probably 30 minutes,

Yes the legs are not the strongest and I was expecting them to be an issue. However I have turned items from very small blanks, large unbalanced chunks of wood right up to a spindle of 1140mm, longer than the max length specified.

Changing speeds, adding / removing items from the chuck spindle is all very easy and quick. I've not had to turn anything so far where the headstock needs to be turned so cannot comment on how well that performs. My lathe has not been bolted to the floor, but my thinking is that if you get a wobbly lathe then you are turning the item at the wrong speed and need to slow it down a little in most cases, but for some a slight speed increase can also sort the wobble out.

The tailstock is fairly small but works well and slides along well. Tightening it down can require a bit of pressure when you use a forsner bit that requires a bit of pressure to cut into the blank. That also brings me on to the reach of the tailstock. I'm sure somewhere I read it was supposed to have 1.5" if not 2". In reality when you get the chuck in place the tailstock has to be out a little for it to grab onto the chuck. You then get about a maximum of 30mm depth to drill into your blank, not very long meaning you have to keep sliding the whole tailstock along to get to any sensible depth. This is not too much of an issue as it is very easy to do but takes a little longer.

The chuck itself is excellent and recommended for any first time buyer as a kit with the lathe. Everything works well and the screw chuck just fits into the C sized jaws. I've not used any of the face plates so far so cannot comment as I will either use the chuck, screw chuck or the live centers. The live centers work a treat, however I will at some time look for something a little better as I do use them for 40-50% of the items I put on the lathe. I've since ordered two more sizes of jaws for the chuck, only used one set so far but they are easy to swap over.

I managed to snap the tool rest when I had a catch on the lathe which threw the skew chisel up in the air and then back into the chuck which forced it down into the tool rest. I went straight back to the Axminister site, ordered another with 24 hour delivery for as little as about £15. It turned up the next day and was the wrong length of shaft for my lathe. Axminster fault, so called them up spoke to someone in Technical they confirmed I had been sent the wrong one and would send another out. However they were out of stock and I ended up waiting for 6-8 weeks before these arrived from China, not good. Luckily I was told that it was covered under warranty and to keep the exiting wrong item until the new one came in. It wasn't ideal but was usable with the only issue that I could just about get it to reach the center height of the work.

Over all the lathe with kit is an excellent buy. 99% of the time you get A++ service from Axminister. The main issue is that since most items are made in China if they are out of stock on something it could take a while to come in. Yes you can buy second hand similar lathes for half the price, but this way you get a good piece of kit and a quality of service for piece of mind. I would thoroughly recommend this for a first time turner like myself and I would order the same lathe again if I was starting out from scratch.

Superb machine

I have used lathes from Myford and Record Power, and this machine is far superior to both that I have had experience of.
Starting with the headstock, the 750w induction motor is a dream, so quiet and with a simple lever to increase rpm it could not be easier to work with. The second great thing is the index rotation of the head stock which enables you to work at fantastically accessible angles. The bed and table are solid, easy to assemble/level and strong, though I have bolted my table down, the 97kg+ of machine and wood keeps it from walking. And this quality is a characteristic of the whole machine.
The supplied Starter Kit is excellent and nothing feels cheap or flimsy or not robust enough to help produce great work.
Overall I could not be happier with this machine, I only wish that I could sleep less and turn more.
