Useful tool

I bought this for trimming pen blanks, with 7mm tubes, it works well in my Makita cordless and at under a fiver it is good value. I have turned several pen blanks from slimline and European style pen kits with it and they have turned out nicely (pardon the pun).

Third one going back

Sorry Axminster but the quality of these are way below the standard I expect from you. The cutters on a barrel trimmer need to be at right angles to the shaft, otherwise you will have a gap between the pen sections. This is the third one that is not fit for purpose.

Nice trimmer

I had a barrel trimmer that was a bigger size than this but decided to get a smaller one to see if there was any difference. I found it to be a bit more aggressive than my original wider one whilst mounted in my Makita which does make sense. The quality would have got 5 stars but it didn't seem to be quite as well made as the one I had before. The cutter itself is good quality with a good glue clearance system. I mainly used it to make slimline 7mm pens. Give the trimmer a little sharpen before first use if you like a bit of sharpening and i'm sure you will be pleased with the results.

Bigger please

I have been using my 7mm barrel trimmer for about 6 years now and it still gives good service on all of the 7mm pens. So it has been good value and durable.
However, the cutter head could do with being a bit wider. I have recently started turning Gillette Mach 3 razor handles which use 7mm tubes but bushings which are nearly 1/2 inch across. Accurately trimming becomes a bit of a chore that would be got around with a 3/4 inch head like those sold by the USA turning suppliers.

By the way, this 7mm trimmer can also be used to trim 8mm pens simply by slipping a spare length of 7mm tube over the shaft. With this improvised shim it then fits neatly into an 8mm tube.
