In Detail

A very useful device for sanding the insides of bowls and other hollow forms on the lathe. The 50mm sanding disc is secured to a rotating foam pad with hook and loop fixing so it is easy to change the grade of the abrasive as the finishing process progresses. The angle of the head can be varied to suit the shape of the bowl. Ten abrasive discs are included with the sander and replacements are available. Overall length is 300mm.

Very disappointed with this. After just one bowl, the head sheared from the shaft, snapping at the plastic join. Axminster exchanged it, and I was much more careful with future use. However, the same failure occurred on the replacement not long afterwards. I tried supergluing the head back in but the join is never strong enough and it failed again. I think i will try the deluxe version because at least you can replace the heads on that one. And it's not much more money.

super kit

Had one of these for 6 years, keep it clean and occasionally lubricate the shaft lightly and it will be perfect. No problems and a great finish.

It works at first......

Like the other reviews, at first it worked perfectly but after sanding 3 bowls it no longer revolves. A shame really as the finish it gives is excellent.

I entirely agree with Chris Fleuty. I bought mine only a month ago and its already failed due to poor wear of the shaft. Im going to ask Axy if they'll let me exchange it because it really isnt fit for purpose. Ive been very impressed with their customer service so Im sure they'll be helpful

Bowl Sander

I was at first pleased with this item. Provided you went the through the grits, it gave a good finish. I have had it four years now, but although not used that much, it has now failed.
The reason for the failure is that the shaft of the head runs in plain bearings. The casting has a hard steel insert closest to the head, and no insert at the other end. Consequently despite lubrication, the upper end, has worn much faster and to some ovallity duty to the angle at which pressure is applied, to such an extent that it no longer rotates smoothly.
My advice - spend a little more and get one with roller bearings, it will perfom better and last much longer.
