In Detail

One of a range of two cross vices which are used to accurately position a component in two directions on a drill press table. Adjustable gibs ensure consistent accuracy and both sides are lockable for the desired position. There are dials on both the lateral and longitudinal travel making drilling precise co-ordinates possible. The milling of non-ferrous materials and plastics is well within the capacity of these well made vices.

Heavy duty - great value - works fine

Went to my local Axminster in Nuneaton and had a look at this vice and also the precision one with a rotating base. Bought the 100mm size and was more than happy with the price. The shop manager provided great support and help even though my purchase was really quite modest considering all the workshop machinery in the store.

Got the vice home and spent half an hour fixing it to the pillar drill table and then cleaning down the packing grease. It is really important to spend some time adjusting the packers on the siders to minimise lateral movement and get the slider wheels working properly.

Tried it out on some fridge hinges that needed all the rivets drilling out and it was just fine.

Very happy and for the type of light, garage type work I do it's just about perfect.

75mm Cross Vice

Bought one of these for work holding on my pillar drill. Chose it as it seemed better constructed than cheaper versions. I stripped it upon receipt, cleaned up the raw edges, replacd the gibbs with fitted brass strip and freed up the handwheel spinners. After carefull assembly it seemed the part and the x-y travel was smooth with very little side to side movement.
However it soon became apparent that the X to Y axis was not 90o, out by a few degrees. yesterday I discovered the horizontal base and the vertical vice jaws are also out from 90 by a few degrees.
I still find the item usefull and continue to use it but I need to build in the inaccuracy to my setting up which is time consuming. I am disapointed at the lack of accuracy in maching the ways and faces. Could have been a great piece of kit.
