In Detail

The advantages of this pen mandrel design are that spacers are no longer necessary to make up the difference between the length of the pen blanks and the mandrel. This also helps to eliminate any vibration encountered when turning blanks on a longer than necessary mandrel shaft. The length of the shaft is adjustable and can be shortened or extended by loosening the locknut at the headstock end. By simply removing the shaft, you also have a really compact and versatile collet chuck which is extremely useful for holding small components for turning. Additional ER20 collets ranging in size from 2-13mm are available.

Great piece of kit

I got this a few months back when I decided to venture into pen turning. Looking at previous reviews I was convinced that getting this model would be worth the extra money, and I was not wrong!

Feels great but...

I'm afraid it seems i have a dud. It sure looks well made and feels that way, but when i tried it out it seems the main rod is ever so slightly bent, resulting in vibration on the end of it.

Tried shortening the rod but it seems the fault is at the end (beginning part seems to be straight)

So cant say im to happy and such dont use it anymore as i can throw away pens made on the mandrel......

Excellent kit

I've been using the Deluxe mandrel for a few months now. Being able to reduce length to reduce possible flex and vibration us very useful and works. I still keep mine longer than it could be to give extra clearance at each end for my most used tool for pen turning, a 3/4" roughing gouge. I rarely use other tools now, with practice I can now make all shapes I want with little sanding required. I have other collet sizes from having a metalworking lathe so being able to use this for small diameter turning is a bonus.

Highly recommended

My new mandrel

Used my new birthday present to myself for the first time today. What a difference from my old mandrel. This is an extremely well made tool. If you are considering taking up pen turning and looking at the cheaper standard mandrel my advice is to pay a few more pounds and get this deluxe model. It really is a chalk and cheese experience
