Description

In Detail

The advantages of this pen mandrel design are that spacers are no longer necessary to make up the difference between the length of the pen blanks and the mandrel. This also helps to eliminate any vibration encountered when turning blanks on a longer than necessary mandrel shaft. The length of the shaft is adjustable and can be shortened or extended by loosening the locknut at the headstock end. By simply removing the shaft, you also have a really compact and versatile collet chuck which is extremely useful for holding small components for turning. Additional ER20 collets ranging in size from 2-13mm are available.

Seemed ok but shaft problems still to be sorted

I initially purchased this along with AH1218VS lathe and lots of other stuff and straight off I turned a pen I was pleased with but over next few pens got more vibration. Axminster sent me a new shaft but I also spent out on an Evolution mandrel saver just in case the tightening of the tailstock was bending the shaft. But even with a new shaft and the Evolution mandrel saver it was difficult to get a smooth finish. Axminster suggestion was that I go and join a local woodturning club but while that might be an idea for general tuition/ideas I am sure I know when an item isnt running true without needing to take my lathe/mandrel 30 miles to the "local" club. To check I fitted this second and new shaft to the collet chuck and pulled out to accommodate 2 blanks but just ran it without any blanks/bushes or tailstock support and definitely runs out of true. Have now had to send the whole mandrel and Evolution item back for them to check but am still awaiting any response. Disappointed in this item as a result.

very good

Had this a couple of days now and have made a couple of pens on it, i find the mandrel to be well made . i am extremely happy with my purchase but i would have appreciated a spanner to tighten the collet as the rod just spins when I've tightened it by hand when trying to screw the mandrel tight on the blanks.
with this considered I can full recommend this mandrel just buy a spanner to go with it

Great piece of kit

I got this a few months back when I decided to venture into pen turning. Looking at previous reviews I was convinced that getting this model would be worth the extra money, and I was not wrong!

Feels great but...

I'm afraid it seems i have a dud. It sure looks well made and feels that way, but when i tried it out it seems the main rod is ever so slightly bent, resulting in vibration on the end of it.

Tried shortening the rod but it seems the fault is at the end (beginning part seems to be straight)

So cant say im to happy and such dont use it anymore as i can throw away pens made on the mandrel......
