Description

In Detail

Operating in a different way to other mandrels, the Evolution Series Compression Pen Mandrel is a big step forward in mandrel design. The prepared pen blanks are located on the shaft with any bushings that may be required and then the included hollow revolving centre is simply moved into position over the shaft. When the tailstock quill is tightened it is the blank and bushings that are held in compression and not the shaft as with conventional mandrels. The result is improved concentricity and results in less vibration during turning. Because the silver steel mandrel shaft is accommodated within the revolving tailstock centre, length adjustment is unnecessary. If you make a lot of pens the time saved by using this mandrel would be considerable.

High quality product - you won't need to invest in another

I was stuck as what to buy never making a pen before. I read lots of the self tightening type and being prone to bending by both over tightening tail stock or pushing too hard. I have always been buy the best, save time increase enjoyment and it has stood me well with a majority of my tools. This was no exception I had this delivered and turned my first pen in 15mins. The rod runs true and the hold is fantastic. My only concern might be some pen kits need an imperial mandril but it probably won't be an issue. You won't be disappointed for the extra £15 quid it takes a possible problem out of your hands so you can concentrate on the turning and not the mechanics of the process. Well done Axminster

You won't be disappointed

The quality of this mandrel shines through. The precision craftsmanship gives a smooth action and the compression system allows you to tighten your mandrel setup without risking bending the shaft. A great piece of kit that is easy to use and although more expensive than most cheap systems, is an investment well worth making.

Evolution pen mandrel

I have bought other so called pen making mandrels. Others are no match for this superbly made piece of machinery. Beautifully made and the bearings very smooth on the live centre.
BUY THIS ONE, don't waste your hard earned money on cheap rubbish.
Well done Axminster.

Pen mandrel

A good solid set-up. The quality of these mandrels are second to none. Used it for the first time and very impressed with the whole system. No play between the mandrel bar and live centre. Another good purchase from Axminster.

Brilliant

Ive only been turning for a year and love every minute on the lathe, i fancied turning some pens, so i looked at various mandrels and decided on this model, i really cannot fault it, ive turned lots of pens and had no problems at all, far better investment than a cheapie version.
