Description

In Detail

An excellent aid for pen turners, the Evolution quick change pen centre is intended for use with any of the Axminster pen mandrels. On most pen mandrels the blanks are mounted on the shaft and held in place with a nut at the tailstock end. A live centre is then brought up against the end of the mandrel shaft to support it during turning. The Evolution centre eliminates the need for a nut and there is no compression of the mandrel shaft. The result is that just the blank and any bushings used are now compressed resulting in smoother turning. This also means that spacers are not required as any exposed section of shaft is accommodated within the body of the centre.

very poor nut free tailstock design.

Purchased the nut free tailstock mandrel,as other feedback remarks have stated about being undersize,it also means the seven millimeter brass tubes are a loose fit, that means you will get runout on the pen blank, this is a very poor design. as an engineer I am disgusted.

compatibility

excellent delivery and quality as always, but be aware will only fit axminster pen mandrels,i have2 mandrels by different manufacturers and it will not fit either of them, which makes there pen bushings only usable with axminster kit

essential piece of kit for production penturners

This is an essential accessory for production turners like myself. It saves me fiddling about with the knurled nut on the mandrel .I have 3 different mandrels and it fits them all no problems. The only tip I would give is don't put a spacer to give you more room just tighten the pen centre up against the bushing and it works great

Looks a quality item, problem with bore/compatability

I ordered the Axminster Evolution Series Quick Change Pen Centre (mandrel saver) yesterday along with some other items, as usual it arrived very quickly this morning and initially I was really pleased with it. The build quality appears to be very high, with a good finish and smooth running bearing, and I was looking forward to giving it a try in the lathe.

Unfortunately this is where things went downhill for me; I use Penn State adjustable mandrels and, on trying to slide the mandrel shaft into the mandrel saver I found it will not fit. The bore is too small. This is not the first time I have seen reports of compatibility issues between Axminster mandrels/accessories and other makes, which is a real shame as (other than this issue) I have usually been very happy with their products.

Overall I would say that this is a quality item as long as you're using all Axminster parts, especially at the current price, so have given it 5 stars for value & quality, but only 1 for features due to compatibility issues.
