In Detail

Hobby Classification & 3 Year Guarantee

Deservedly our best selling morticer, this bench top machine is predominately made from heavy cast iron and has the huge benefit of both sideways and front to back table movement. The workpiece is manoeuvred into place with the table using the convenient hand wheels. There's no more jigging and shimming to get the mortice positioning spot on. The table work clamp has multiple locating pin positions and can even clamp tapered work such as table legs. The table and head stock both run on dovetail slides and are provided with adjustable jib strips ensuring years of accurate use. A gas strut counterbalances the weight of the head and motor and gives great downfeed control. An upgraded, quiet and cool running alloy bodied motor provides ample power for any job. Stops are provided for both vertical and horizontal movements for repeat work. A useful optional accessory is our unique spacer block that can raise the headstock by 50mm, allowing even taller workpieces to be accommodated. Add the optional drill chuck and you have a capable small bench drill as well. This is a perfect morticer for home use. Please note, however good any morticing machine is, it is only as good as the chisel and bit fitted! Supplied with mortice auger chuck and key, chisel bush and service tools. N.B. It takes 3/4" shank chisels only. Long shank mortice bits may need the shank length reducing.

Received my machine a couple of weeks ago and I too, found that the chisels did not fit. Took off the quick set collar and removed the clamping bolt but still no joy. Called Axi and they sent me another couple of chisels which also did not fit. I removed the chuck access doors and gave a slight tap with a nail punch to the top side of the supplied installed bush in the adaptor collar, was told this should just fall out but it was jammed tightly in the housing.
On examination it seems that the bush was mis-shaped by the incorrect fitting of the clamping bolt by not aligning the pre-drilled hole with the bolt. Managed to re-shape the bush and with the help of a round file, got the chisels to slide up and down quite freely. Put back the quick set collar and set the auger clearance, continued setting up the chisel and cut a mortice with 2 inch oak.............doddle, brilliant machine and glad I tinkered rather than send it back. First class service from Axi.

Good - but definitely for the hobbyist

I have had my morticer for about three years now and have used in on four jobs, working in Oak. Probably, I should have bought a bigger machine. It is easy to set-up, but a bit tricky to set-up really well. I had to cut through mortices in 100 mm oak stiles and they need to be cut from both sides to ensure they are good and true. But Axminster sell some excellent bits - the Japanese style are definitely the best, but are expensive.

The chuck and runner did not run true and I found I needed to shim under the motor with some 0.20 mm washers before it ran true. Next I will buy a proper pillar drill.
I definitely don't regret buying this morticer - it has helped me do projects I would otherwise not have tackled.

petite machine super !

Excellent Piece of hobby equipment

Purchased during the sale period so got myself this as a Christmas present to myself (any old excuse I know!) along with 3 of the Axcaliber Quick Set mortice chiselled bit for around the pre sale price of the machine. Bargain!

I found it very easy to assemble, very few parts to fit, instruction manual was clear enough. All in all a good purchase. Even at the full price, now owning one, I'd recommend this machine without hesitation.

Fantastic Machine

This machine was bought for my Christmas present (2015), so on receipt of the machine I quickly set it up, checked it over and had a quick go to check for machining accuracy etc etc.
Firstly I must complement Axminster - fantastic to deal with and fast delivery as usual.
The machine came undamaged and all the bits-and-pieces were in the box. The thing is really well made and very very sturdy. A lovely machine to use and cuts effortlessly and accurately (out the box). I tried to stress the machine by using a 16mm bit in an old piece of mahogany - no problem at all. The upgraded 500w motor can handle 'normal' cutting effortlessly.
Can I say that Axminster has their spec wrong. I measured side-to-side table movement at 165mm and back-to-front movement at 65mm - this was measuring the table in one extreme position, and then moving it to its limits to the opposite side. This is a big difference from Axminster's 100mm and 40mm.
Similar to other reviews; the machine is very well made, and has the facility to adjust the table movement - front and back - to accommodate for any discrepancies. The person who commented about the 5/8th bits restricting you when it came to buying new bits - I don't really know why that was an issue, or if he'd tried the internet, but I could find 5/8ths bits without any problems from multiple sites. Also, if you go onto the Charnwood site and search their bench-top mortise W316 (which is exactly the same machine), you will be able to buy a bush that can up the 5/8ths bush that comes with the Axi machine, to 13/16ths. This will allow you to put the bigger bits in and will give you limitless bit size buying options – bearing in mind the motor is rated for up to a 16mm bit. I bought the 13/16th bush and it fits no problem at all. I know from another owner of the older Axi machine, that they used to provide the 13/16th bush adaptor as part of the machine package, so I'm unsure why they stopped providing it or even selling it as an accessory.
I also bought the block riser, so with that and the upgraded motor, this machine beats the Charnwood machine hands down.
A lovely machine I look forward to standing at for years to come.
