In Detail

Hobby Classification & 3 Year Guarantee

A good machine for a home workshop where there is a need for a medium-sized planer thicknesser. The body and tables are constructed from rigid aluminium castings and the stand from heavy duty steel sheet, all of which give a very solid feel to the machine. The 260mm wide two blade planer block is driven by a 2.2kW motor and will prove more than adequate for the majority of applications, although a 16 Amp supply may prove necessary in those situations where the voltage is on the low side. The generous 3mm maximum cutting depth is useful when cleaning up rough sawn or twisted timber. The cutter block, which rotates at 6,500rpm, is fitted with two double-edged disposable knives. Among the additional features which make this machine such good value for money are a removable outfeed table for easy access to the thicknesser, deep extruded aluminium fence adjustable for angle, full width cutter guard, anti-kickback fingers on the thicknesser feed, no-volt-release switch with emergency stop and a dust hood for extracting from above and below the table. N.B. 16A supply maybe required.

Very good for the money

I also have the yellow trim model ob the leg stand. The only niggle is that the chain sprockets on the height control for the thicknesser table are made of cheap steel and have worn out, so the chain jumps the teeth. Same with a friend's example. But over ten years it has worked well on hard and soft woods. Good value

excellent machine for the money

"Clone" of the (original?) Electra Beckum machine (made in the same factory?) only weaknesses I have found are the torsion spring - part number 246 - now on my third and the main NVR switch - now on my second and soon to need a third (electrical motor brake no longer works though motor still starts and stops but takes around 5 seconds to stop)
The HSS blades and carrier kit were a worthwhile "extra" saving on disposable blades though I keep a couple of sets of disposables and the old carriers if machining "dirty" timber. Can't say much more except I have had my "clone" for 15 years and it is in nearly daily use.
Have a look at the Metabo HC260 C 260mm Planer / Thicknesser - same machine and the Record Power PT260 260mm Planer Thicknesser - same machine

Very Good Results But.........

So delivery was spot as always from Axminster. Grumpy TNT guy was not impressed though, this thing weighs a ton!
It was packaged extremely well and came on its own pallet.

2 instruction manuals come with this item. The 1st from axminster is for the actual planer/thicknesser, its ok but not great. The 2nd manual is for the base and its possibly the worst ive seen. These instructions are a distraction to say the least and really do need to be rewritten.

Screwing the nvr switch into 2mm plastic with 2 self tapping screws is a bit bizzare to me. that switch needs to be well mounted and it just isnt. ill be fettling that to be a bit better for sure.

its a real pain to set up but i think this is to be expected with all planer/thicknessers. it really does depend on how anal you want to be but expect to be setting it up for a good few hours. A 1 metre square edge and a nice true blade from a combination square is an absolute essential for getting the tables ''co-planer''.
The blades were correctly mounted at the factory and the table tops were very flat. unfortunately the mounts where the infeed table goes were not true and had to be shimmed out.

The overall quality is not great. i did expect slightly better from a hobbie rated machine. expect paint to peel and poorly machined surfaces straight out of the box.

after the bad points this isnt actually a bad machine. when its set up it works very well and gives a good sheen finish with ZERO snipe in both planing and thicknessing mode. Once the fence is at 90 degrees (this can be a pain and take a while) it will turn out nice square angles with ease. I dont think this will be a workshop workhorse for years to come but it will definately do me for a while. Im pleased with my purchase.

Excellent little machine

I bought this machine's predecessor. exactly the same specs and features - this one has red trim! Well worth the money just be prepared for the supplied stand to take a while to assemble!
Small niggle would be the positioning of the nvr assembly which when you're plugged in, limits / prohibits access to the locker cupboard behind. I have had my machine for two years now and it still delivers every time whether teak, mahogany, oak, pine, or even mdf it planes and thicknesses square and true.
Might be 'hobby' rated but I've used mine for a couple of hours every week for two years.
A very good place to start. Well done Axminster!
