a great upgrade

This was easy to fit. In fact it took longer to clear space for it than to attach it. This had the added benefit of adding weight and stability. I've been able to run the lathe at much higher revs with out of round blanks. An interesting feature which isn't mentioned in the description is that the far end of the extension is exactly the same as the end of the lathe bed, complete with threaded holes. This means that in theory, you could extend the lathe indefinitely! Very pleased with it.

Fits other lathes

Having previously looked at several Axminster Hobby lathes I reckoned a lot of the fittings we're pretty generic. I measured up the AH1218 lathe in the shop and compared it with my Scheppach dmt 450, it looked a good fit and because of Axminsters good returns policy I took a punt, sure enough it went straight on. The only fettling was filing a couple of thou off about 1 inch of the inside of the bed track on one side of my lathe where it sat proud at the join.

The fitting instructions aren't too clever; they told me to fit the lathe extension loosely then clamp up the tail stock across the join before tightening up the connecting bolts to achieve a flat lathe bed, this didn't work and I did it by eye. At first there was a catch running the tailstock over the join when it was all bolted up but I put a straight edge along the length of the bed and adjusted the end feet on the extension to bring the bed level, then check tightened the connecting bolts. This solved the catch, the fitting instructions don't mention levelling the bed.

I've since used it to run up four legs for a towel rail 80cm long (previously restricted to 40cm) and it worked well, there was a bit of flexing of the wood but I had turned them down to 23mm dia & I reckon this would have been much the same on a one piece lathe. I couldn't detect any excess vibration at the tailstock.
I've been hobby turning for less than a year learning off U Tube & I'm not at it every day but for someone like me this is a fantastic piece of kit enormously expanding the capability of a small bench top lathe and all for less than £50.
