In Detail

Hobby Classification & 3 Year Guarantee

The Axminster Hobby HBS350N is a floor standing bandsaw that will carry out almost all jobs that any keen hobby woodworker or woodturner demands. The strong steel welded body features a tapered rear column design for greater rigidity. Cutting depth is precisely controlled by a handwheel operated rack and pinion whilst the substantial, surface ground, cast iron table tilts easily up to 45° on widely spaced trunnions for bevel or mitre work. The rip fence operates smoothly on a front aluminium rail and has a roller guide bearing at the rear running in a steel channel. A fine width control system is included and the fence can also be turned through 90° when smaller items need to be cut. It’s also locked with a quick action cam lever, and clamps securely at both front and rear. Ball bearing roller blade guides with micro adjustment support the blade above and below helping ensure straight cuts with a good finish. Power is provided by an 850W induction motor driving a belt through a two speed pulley to allow heavy or finer cuts to be taken. This top of the range model uses balanced, cast iron wheels which run smoothly to give adequate inertia to the blade. Twin 100mm dust outlets are provided, one positioned beneath the table providing excellent dust extraction. A wide selection of blades can be fitted, suitable for all types of cutting tasks on this machine. The leg frame stand is included and can be fitted with an optional mobility wheel set (508207). This is a very well specified bandsaw and ought satisfy the discerning requirements of many enthusiastic home woodworkers. It’s supplied with mitre fence, leg stand and a UK made Axcaliber blade.

Needs better quality control

The staff at Cardiff store have been perfect with there customer relations and helping to sort out this band saw. Lets start at the beginning with the bottom back guide not moving, I discovered this was due to the pressed washer behind it being put in the wrong way, turn it round and it works fine.( at a later date I found the top back guide was the same) When the store technician came round to look at the machine he discovered that there was not enough clearance for the top back guide so he had to grind some of the Aluminum housing away, he then checked the machine set up and was pleased with that. In the instruction manual it shows a picture of the underside guides ( Fig 41) and tells you about this nut and how to adjust it, well there is no nut underneath, but there are two small hex bolts which are the adjuster, an Allen key is provided to adjust these, but its virtually impossible to slacken the hex bolts or tighten them without taking the table off. I have modified an allen key so I don't have to take the table every time I change a blade.
A general note about blade tension is to make sure the tracking locknut is released to tension and de-tension the bade otherwise it retains the tension.
Back to the manual as I wanted a 1/4" blade and the manual said it was a 2490mm or 98" blade so off to the store to buy one on my return home I noticed that the spare blade that came with the machine was 103" so on the phone to the store who sorted it out with great efficiency. Well there's more today whilst cleaning the machine I found a hex bolt on the floor and after examining the machine I discovered it was one of the table mount bolts, so I put it back in and checked the rest and guess what they were all loose. So if your considering buying this machine I hope you have better luck with it than I have. I am very disappointed with it, if was a cheep machine I may have expected these sort of problems, but not for the price it was and being an Axminster machine

Hobby Bandsaw

Hobby user took delivery a few months ago. This is a solidly constructed saw at the top end of the Axminster hobby range. So far it has done everything asked of it. I was debating between this saw and the bottom of the range trade band saw (SBW3501B) but went for this hobby saw after attending a demo day at the Basingstoke Axminster store. There is a good range of blades available - the saw comes with a blade already in it (I guess to stop the inside mechanism moving in transit) and an additional 6tpi general purpose blade. Instructions for assembly and blade changing are really good and clear. Accepting delivery was a little challenging as the saw weighs about 100kg and it arrived in a wooden crate on the back of a large lorry. Got there in the end and it was worth the effort. Twinned with the Axminster extractor (AWEDE2) and working well.

Axminster Customer Service

I have purchased a number of items from Axminster and have always been more that satisfied with the quality and promptness of dispatch.
Recently I had a problem with a band saw blade and was uncertain as to what had caused it. I contacted home base to ask where to send it for advice. The response was to tell me not to spend money on postage and packaging returning the item, they would put a replacement in the post there and then FREE OF CHARGE!! To cap it all I was sent two new blades to replace the old one.
My last purchase was a larger more capable band saw (AWHBS350N)/ A very nice piece of equipment that will give me good service in my workshop. It is very reassuring to have your company at instant call via the internet and to get such good prompt service when needed.
Keep up the good work.
