In Detail

This oscillating belt sander has many well thought-out features. Suitable to any small to medium sized joinery workshop or cabinet maker's workshop, it is very well guarded and easy to use. It can be used horizontally or vertically; the belt oscillates across the platen 50 times per minute providing a scratch free finish. In the vertical mode the work table can be raised by means of a hand wheel and adjusted to give a close gap to the sanding belt. A large quadrant scale gives an accurate indication of the belt inclination for bevel work. Incremental stops are included for most popular angles. An additional use is as a small vertical drum sander with the fitment of any of the three bobbins (1 1/2", 2", 3") supplied, using a small table assembly surrounding the idler roller. A robust, welded steel stand supports the whole machine and has a large cupboard for storing sanding sheets and accessories. A very well made and a very useful machine in any workshop.

A serious sander - rubbish manual

As ever the Aminster heavy goods delivery service was excellent and helped get this very serious machine into the workshop.
One free of a very substantial cardboard box and pallet the machine does require some assembly before it can be used. Buy a couple of hundred quid bench belt/disc sander and you just have t get it out of the box. Buy one of these and you have to put together the covers on the belt, which involves putting the pins into the hinges! The manual is not great in this regard and you will have to follow common sense and/or decipher the relevant parts of the exploded view diagram.
It is also worth noting that the almost identical two pages that show how to adjust the height of the table are both wrong as the levers referenced once released allow the table to be moved towards/away from the belt.
It is also worth noting that as with other Industrial grade 16A equipment the machine comes without a plug! Even given that a few customers will go for a wired in approach the extra cost of a 16A commando plug would not have a big hit on Axminsters margins!
So the manual is rubbish and the box a challenge to remove.
The machine is very very capable.
A very powerful and quiet running motor powers the belt and keeps it running smoothly the oscillation probably helps reduce burning if too much pressure is applied, due to the slow rate of oscillation it does little to reduce scratch marks.
The table is extremely solid and easy to adjust in terms of both height and distance from the belt, it is also very well machined and totally flat.
The belt runs flat and true which allows for sanding very large pieces totally flat, remarkable for the usable length of the belt.
Belt changes are easy enough though the tension release lever could pull back the free running roller a little further which would make belt changing easier.
In belt mode the positioning of the power switch is not brilliant though when using the included spindles the switch is in the right place. For the spindles there is an effective table but there is no oscillation.
All round a very solid machine which is well engineered and more than up to the job.
Just a pity about the manual and plug, but these just need to be taken into account and should not stop purchase of the machine where it is needed.
