In Detail

Following on the success of the drum sander bobbin set we have sourced this king size bobbin with which to make your own sanding devices. Mounted vertically in a drill press or drill stand it makes, with the addition of some simple woodwork, an excellent bobbin sander. Alternatively, mounted onto the end of a small motor or in the lathe, an excellent contour sander with endless applications. The bobbin uses 150mm wide abrasive strip, held and tensioned in place with an elliptical locking key. Size 75 x 150mm, supplied with 100g loading and 12.7mm(1/2") male shaft (held in place with a grub screw) which may be withdrawn leaving a 16mm(5/8") hole 31.75mm(1.1/4") long - suitable for most small 230V motors. N.B Maximum rotational speed is 1,500rpm.

Mother of DIY drum sanders

I bought the largest size and it's great. To fit the paper, use the original as a template for size and position of creases on the ends (that go into the slot). Crease the ends of the new paper before trying to fit. With the tube clamp completely removed slide about an inch of the paper into the slot at the bottom to get started and slide the paper up the drum with a hand cupped around it to stop it going slack and preventing the ends from sliding out the slot. Once fitted use a screwdriver through the bottom hole to push the ends of the paper to one side, slide the tube clamp up the hole and twist to clamp the paper. This is the best way I found to fit very coarse paper.

Axminster Large Drum Sander

Great product, a llittle annoying that its hard to find rolls of abrasive to use with this (you usually have to cut sheets of paper down) BUT its does the job its supposed to.

yes, there are no instructions on changing the paper, but its every easy to do, i would argue that anyone who can't do this or work out how to do this with the tools provided & a bit of common sense... should not be using powertools...

Axminster Large Drum Sander

I bought the 75 x 150mm sander recently, very pleased with it, like most other cutting or abrasive tools, works perfectly ok if you understand how to use it properly.

Yup, No instructions

Perfect size for job I'm doing.

But yes, it's a total pain changing the paper. 9 times out of 10 it ends us to slack and you end up ruining all your sheets as they flap about.

Also the cam is too slack so you have to squash it in a vic to make it work.

Also the tiny 18mm screws holding the spindle on work loose with the vibrations - had to replace them with longer ones.

Not impressed.
