1/4" Premium Bowl Gouge

What can I say other than WOWW!! This tool feels comfortable in the hand, well balanced. It cuts with ease, and retains its edge VERY well indeed. The Flute is not as narrow as a "V", yet not as flat/rounded as a "U", it's somewhere in between. Don't think of it as a "compromise" though, it's a GREAT tool.
Liking the profile shape, and grind angle of the gouge, I gave it a quick sharpen with a Diamond File before putting it to work, doing about 70% of the rough turning of a small Spalted Hornbeam bowl. I didn't need to touch the edge up at all!!...it just kept on going, and I dare say I could have done another one before needing any attention. This tool is FAR, FAR BETTER THAN IT'S PRICE-TAG WOULD SUGGEST!!! So,If you're still wondering "is there much difference between the Premier, and a standard HSS gouge, seeing how little difference there is in price?" Let me put it this way: I won't be buying HSS in future, so put your hand that tiny bit deeper in your pocket and go Premier....YOU WON'T REGRET IT..PROMMISE!! Well Done Axminster, you've done yourselves proud with this one. :-) :-)

1/4" Premium Bowl Gouge

I've only received this tool this morning, so this is only my initial impressions after using it for the very first time.
As with almost all turning tools, they need a sharpen before use. Liking the grind angle, and the profile, I just put an edge on this tool with a Diamond File, and I must say, it takes a VERY GOOD edge indeed!! I used it to do a fair amount of the work on a 6 1/2 inch diameter by 3 1/2 inch deep, Spalted Hornbeam bowl, from a still slightly green blank. THE EDGE LASTED ALL THE WAY THROUGH, and gave a nice clean cut. The tool is very comfortable to use, and feels really secure in the hand, and does what you would expect from a tool costing twice the price. If you're looking at these gouges thinking "can it be much better than a normal HSS gouge, considering there's only a few pounds difference in price?" wonder not one second longer, put your hand in your pocket, and BUY IT....you WON'T REGRET IT!! I've used HSS tools since I started turning 2 1/2 years back (I turn most days, as I'm medically retired) but I promise you, I won't be adding any more HSS tools to my collection, not for the sake of a couple of extra pounds to go Premium. ;-) Keith Sharples (Nr Kings Lynn, Norfolk)
