Description

In Detail

The shorter length and palm grip handles make butt chisels the perfect choice for fine trimming and final fitting tasks. The blades of these Rider bevel edge butt chisels are fine-grained, chrome manganese steel. Each one is carefully hardened and tempered to 59 HRC, then finely ground and finished with a 25° bevel. The Rider blades require only final honing to achieve a fine, long lasting edge (we suggest a 30° micro-bevel).

We chose to fit our Rider butt chisels with handles made from dense European Hornbeam. Sanded smooth and given a light oil finish, the Hornbeam has a superb feel in the hand. The pear shaped handle sits comfortably in your palm; a small flat on the back prevents the chisel from rolling off the bench. Each handle ends in a polished stainless steel ferrule with a shock absorbing leather washer between the handle and the chisel’s bolster. The blades are approximately 65mm long with the overall length 175mm. European made.

A little disapointing.

Having purchased the 12mm version at the Harrogate tool show(see previous report) I was delighted so I purchased the other 3 in the set last week.
This time they were not sharp out of the packet. The 20mm and 25mm versions took some considerable time to get the backs flat. (ALL SUNDAY AFTERNOON) The 20mm in particular you could feel the unevenness. The 6mm version was ok.
Having got the backs flat and polished it didn't take long to get a razor sharp edge.
So in the end I am happy with these chisels and as I say just a little disappointed with having to spend some time getting them in a useable condition.

A little effort gives great results

In over 60 years this is the first time that I have owned a set of butt chisels and they are excellent for intricate work. The backs did require some flattening but the grinding marks took more effort to remove. The result though is a good set of chisels for a reasonable price which seem to hold their edge quite well.

Bargain

Comfortable in the hand in use. Quiet sharp out of the packet. Honed to extremely sharp edge that has kept well after a great deal of trimming on oak end grain.
At the price an absolute bargain. I will have to treat myself to the rest of the set.
Thanks Axminster.

Like using a screwdriver

These chisels are ideal for one hand use, they are just like using a screwdriver. They are very easy to manouver and aid the users dexterity. A worthwhile addition to any tool kit. It sits very nicely in the hand like a screwdriver. They are made with very good quality steel, holds it's edge well. Priced to suit a budget. Well done Axminster.
