Description

In Detail

Trade Classification & 3 Year Guarantee

This is our largest sized, floor standing Trade Series pillar drill. Very robustly made from cast iron and machined steel giving high strength and stability. It has a highly accurate chuck spindle assembly, running in NSK ball race bearings. The quill housing is a good fit within the headstock casting, giving consistent drilling. Powered by a smooth running 1,100W induction motor, there are 12 belt speeds between 150-2,700rpm. The Japanese made belts are of the multi-vee type, chosen for maximum grip and the lowest level of vibration. The belt cover also has a safety switch to prevent the drill being run with the cover open. The down feed is via a one-piece cast iron handle with soft rubber grips and there is an accurate drilling depth control. A quality 3-16mm keyless chuck is fitted. The chuck guard is electrically interlocked for safety and is easily adjustable for height. The switch system has a separate locking emergency stop switch, plus there is a switch for the integrated LED work light. Table height is controlled via a rack and pinion system; the whole table assembly can be swivelled away to allow the base to be used as a work support. This trade rated pillar drill offers many unique features and is robust enough for hard work in a busy workshop. A great choice for any trade or school workshop looking for a great performing floor standing pillar drill. Please note, this machine must be bolted to the floor for safe working. Arrives to you 95% assembled, so no heavy lifting required.

A sturdy full throated floor pillar drill

I arrived at Axminster, Basingstoke almost determined to purchase the Jet JDP-17 having viewed a number of YouTube reviews. I felt always restricted by the throat size of my previous Axminster drill (now 17 years old but still going strong). Then I saw it, a large drill the Axminister Trade Series ATDP20F: a true whopper, with a 90mm pillar diameter - as a previous review for the Jet JPD-17 stated. The throat is a full 10" (255mm) so partially obviating the need for a radial arm. The drill is extremely sturdy being large and pretty much all cast iron. Perhaps it does not have some of the features of the Jet but build quality is excellent, in my opinion. It is a large machine with a spindle taper 3MT. The machine has an induction motor drawing 1.1KW, and is fine for a normal 13amp ring main The drill does suffer with some vibration but the substantial cast iron nature is absorbing of this. I have not, as yet, bolted he machine to the floor. The only negative really is that the castings (for example on the large table) is only ground on the working surfaces with the edges being a fairly rough casting. This is also true, to some extent, of the Jet equivalent.
I would highly recommend this new pillar drill from Axminster.
