In Detail

This is one of the most unique machines in the whole of the Axminster range. Its rugged construction, independently and fully adjustable tables, three-knife cutter block and powerful motor make it a popular choice with keen hobbyists and trade professionals alike. The planer is constructed largely of cast iron and is mounted on a substantial steel stand which also houses the motor and the switchgear. The planer block is equipped with three resharpenable high speed steel blades which give a truly excellent finish to the timber and there is a setting device included which eases the job of blade changing. The planer block is fully protected across its whole width by a strong aluminium alloy guard. The infeed and outfeed tables are independently adjustable for height, which not only makes for quick adjustment of the blade height relative to the table but allows for cutting of stopped chamfers up to 12mm deep. The side fence, which is a heavy cast iron unit with a ground surface, is clamped in two places and is fully adjustable for angles between 45° and 90°. Waste extraction is from the rear of the machine via a 100mm(4") flanged spigot fixed to the body and connected to a chippings extractor. Wheels are fitted to the stand to allow mobility around the workshop.

Excellent machine

This machine is really nice to use and gives an excellent finish. It is an updated version of a machine which has been made since the dawn of time under various names. It is used in a professional workshop and has been used every day for nine months and is doing very well.

The build quality is very good, all cast iron and steel. Theres quite a bit of metal there to reduce vibration. One of the most useful features is the ability to cut rebates, way quicker than fiddling about with the router table. I use it to cut nearly all my rebates as it has enough power to cut them really easily, the action being similar to that of a spindle moulder. Shame you have to remove the guard when doing this but its easy to make a homemade guard from a block of wood clamped to the machine next to the cutter.

The fence is good because it is compact and doesn't stick out of the back of the machine too much so it can be placed pretty close to the wall, saving some floorspace. Built in wheels are useful and strong but you need to chock them with little wedges to stop the machine following the timber as you plane it!

Ive accurately planed 5000mm Iroko using this machine, luckily it was easy to move outside to be able to do this. The only faults I have noticed are that the fence is slightly twisted so you have to be careful when setting it that you use the square near to the cutterblock location. It still planes very accurately though and you have to let little things like that go especially seeing how good it is for the money.

Mostly excellent

This was a birthday present from my wife to replace an old 2nd hand bench planer which had died, and as such there is really no comparison to what preceded it. If set up properly, if is an absolute joy to use and has become the most used tool in my shop by miles. It cuts beautifully and makes milling your own stock an absolute doddle.

One word of caution however. Setting this thing up is far from simple. It is an incredibly fiddly and time consuming job, and tensioning the blade is impossible to do without help.

On the whole however I ma very glad I own it.
