In Detail

We have noticed an increase in the number of professional woodturners using sharpening jigs and there is a good reason for this. Less material is removed at each visit to the grinder and a single facet uniform bevel is easily attained. If you are new to turning, then this system will enable you to repeatedly achieve the correct profiles on your tools no matter what skill level you are at. This comprehensive sharpening system when used with a suitable grinder (not included) is capable of sharpening skew chisels, roughing gouges, bowl gouges, spindle gouges and scrapers. The system includes a V-arm, which can used for sharpening gouges and skew chisels with the included attachment. A 115mm x 75mm platform which can be used for all manner of sharpening tasks but would be perfect for scrapers, and a Versa-grind attachment for those classic fingernail gouge profiles favoured by most professional woodturners. Full instructions for easy set-up and tips on sharpening are included with the system. Suitable for most 150mm or 200mm double ended bench grinders.

Good, but..

Well made and solid jig. Unfortunately the platform jig is too short for my heavy duty draper 8" grinder which means some tools ground at high angle would contact the wheel dangerously close to the wheel centreline. A definite safety hazard, shall have to correct with a 1/2" spacer block under the platform, shame Axminster don't supply such an item.

Well made jig

Had it delivered just yesterday, I'm pleased with it. Their was few things that could be improved on like more instructions on setting it up on the bench, and also setting the angles on the vari-gind jig. only for a tip (youtube Video: Lyle on Sharpening) from a previous reviewer I would have been stuck. The hight adjustment of the platform is not high enough.

well made jig

I was really pleased with the build quality and finish of this jig. It comes with everything you need for turning tools. Like another reviewer, I had trouble with the long shaft hitting the back wall of my workshop So I cut 11 cm off it, no problem. I'm now using the offcut to make a spacer to raise the platform so it clears the guard on my Axminster grinder. Not really big things but it would have been a nice touch to include some spacers and longer m5 screws to attach it. I would still recommend this to anyone as long as you know you may have to do some minor fettling with it.

Great piece of kit

Once I had it set up, which you need to take plenty of care with, my turning tools have never been so sharp and it is really quick too. I wish I'd had one of these years ago! Take your time setting it up and you won't regret buying it! Only slight quibble, the table accessory wouldn't go to the right hight/position for my scrapers without cutting a bit off the guard on the left hand wheel.

Slight mods needed

I've got a Cruesen grinder and didn't have a problem fitting the rig. The grinder itself is raised off an MDF base board anyway and was at the correct height as stated in the fitting instructions. However, the table assembly did leave a little to be desired. When the table assembly was locked in place the table surface was at an angle to the wheel, down on the right hand side. This was corrected by fitting a packing piece (an old hacksaw blade) under the edge of the slide carrier. The other issue with the table was that it wasn't square to the face of the wheel. The two holes in the table were correctly drilled but the threaded holes in the block underneath were out of line. Fix - use one screw and Araldite, simples.

The final point is more affected by my workshop size and grinder position within the workshop. The long slide is too long to go in far enough to be used with the vario jig, the back end limits on the wall. Fix - a friend is fabricating another slide to be 40cm which will be a perfect fit for my little workshop. Axminster - how about a second shorter slide for those of us with little space? Even if it's available as an extra would help.
