Description

In Detail

The Bagpress MiniPress MK2 Vacuum Press has been especially developed for home, school or college use. The MK2 version features a much better European manufactured pump with a higher vacuum performance. Supplied with all equipment required to get you started, this unit will enable the keen hobby woodworker or tutor to create veneered panels, marquetry or laminations quickly and easily. By extracting the air from within the bag you create an even and massive pressure of approximately 8 tons per m3. As the air is removed from the timber's pores, the glue creates a stronger bond. Quiet running and non intrusive this unit has a self contained pump and can achieve 80% vacuum, enough for most purposes. The large capacity 800 x 1,300mm vacuum bag is supplied as standard and will accommodate many projects. This unit is ideal for marquetry, veneering and small scale laminating at home, school or college. If you are laminating with a vacuum press it is only necessary to provide a one piece former as the vacuum bag will provide an even pressure as it moulds the workpiece into the shape of the former.

Good for a hobbyist - let down by low cost bag connector & no vac gauge

I am new to vacuum pressing and can't afford the larger bagpress/airpress setups so opted for this as I am only veneering a few drawer panels/boxes etc on plywood.
The unit comes in a nice plywood box ( first one was damaged in transit - quickly sorted out by Axminster as per their excellent service). The bag comes in a cardboard tube - be careful when opening as the tube ends are stapled - and if you don't properly remove the staples you may rip the bag material as it slides out of the tube.

The vacuum pump is a nice unit but is missing - IMHO - a vital part - a vacuum gauge. Without the gauge it's hard to know whether you are pulling the right amount of vacuum.
The through the bag connector is two pieces of rough cast plastic with a rubber washer for the seal. The metal vacuum hose connector screws into the plastic. I think this wouldnt last very long and I bought a metal through the bag connector off the Internet - together with inline vacuum gauge.

The vacuum hose is quite short - just over a metre or so. I bought a longer length off e-bay.

So my new setup is the above unit with a metal through the bag connector and inline vacuum gauge with 4 metres of hose.

When using the unit the first time I noticed it pulled up to 18 Inches of mercury - the bag looked like it had taken all the air out etc. I then checked the end of bag clamps and by pressing them more tightly it fixed the leak and the unit then pulled 25 inches and held this for the hour or it took to do the pressing. Proof that the gauge is a worthy tool to have!

Whilst the pump isn't noisy ( less than a vacuum cleaner) - it isn't quiet either! - the noise is quite irritating - so not the sort of this to have in the kitchen if the shed is too cold without wearing ear defenders - which is what I'm doing whilst typing this.!

All in all the unit is just ok for the price - but the little things like the bag connector and lack of gauge bring it down a bit.

Should be fine for my hobby use - but less so for a pro.
