Description

In Detail

This bench unit utilises a close tolerance lug and slot system to form a rigid structure. Bolted diagonal braces at the rear and cross braces bolted between the legs at either end add even more strength. Both the worktop and shelf decking are hard 12mm thick chipboard. An extra support beam runs under the middle of the top. All the steel has a scratch resistant epoxy powder coated finish. The rolled safe edge eliminates sharp edges and adds extra strength. This will make an excellent workbench in anyone’s garage, coupled with the heavy-duty shelves it is an ideal mitre saw work station. The maximum loading per shelf is 90kg UDL. This UK manufactured bench arrives flat-packed. Assembled dimensions: 1,320mm wide x 938mm high x 490mm deep.

Good Value

Bench arrived with a little delay in delivery, not Axminsters fault. Easy to assemble, with bracing working well. Powder Coating done extremely well, and I am well pleased with Bench. Good value.

Bench Frame Unit

Usual speedy delivery from Ax. This unit is perfect for the small workshop or restricted space working; very solid once properly assembled (the chap who had to 'drill his own holes' probably made the same easy mistake as i did, which was not to realise that there are two different sets of long supports, one with bolt holes and ones without; the ones without are for the bottom shelf and the ones with holes, for the top/work shelf. Piece of cake to put together with good strength folded-steel legs and braces. Good quality 10mm bolts. Good quality powder coating [doesn't flake off when components are put together, unlike some cheaper shelving units]. The chip board shelves are 1/2" & 3/4" [for my application MDF would have been better and will be replaced].
NB. Importantly the bench is actually deeper than the advertised typo at 490mm NOT 400mm
Now the gripe: uk couriers ubiquitous employment of numpties guarantees a damaged end product if it isn't dispatched in an armoured cage. My unit's chipboard shelf had two large scallops sheared off the edges where it had been conscientiously and carefully loaded onto the van [that is chucked from a reassuringly dizzy height] The polythene packaging is very good quality but unfortunately there's nothing to protect the edges & corners of the chip board :-(
That being said, for the price i am confident this unit will give many years of solid service and have no hesitation in recommending it :-)

Bench Frame Unit

I ordered two of these benches and delivery was fantastic and next day.
It only took 10 minutes to set each one up and they are brilliant!!
They are very ridged once all the supports are in place and even better when against the wall. My Jet Mini Lathe with bed extension fits PERFECTLY on one bench leaving about a ½inch gap between ends of the lathe and end of the table. With weight on them they are obviously even more solid.
I highly recommend this product from Axminster!

Bench Frame Unit

This arrived a day after my Sjoberg Duo workbench, so I had the pleasure of assembling both benches in one session. The Sjoberg is a proper carpenters bench, superbly constructed and largely magnificent in every respect.

The subject of this review costs about 7x less and is more of an all purpose table than a proper bench. It will serve as a good back-up workspace for assembly and as a support for power tools such as a grinding wheel. The build quality is fair, if spartan, and it only becomes adequately solid once you have assembled all the parts and inserted the tight fitting shelves, but once complete it feels quite robust. Overall, I am very happy with it, although I would have preferred not to have to drill my own bolt holes for the cross brace, which was only pre-drilled on one side.

One other small comment. The table is quite high compared to my Sjoberg, which might not suit the smaller woodworker.
