Description

This very compact palm router from Bosch is ideal for not only the edging of laminates but also for edge moulding, mortising and a range of other work that would benefit from a powerful but light and easy to control router. Now supplied with a kit of accessories making this machine even more versatile.
The 600W motor means that this palm router is almost as powerful as many 1/4" routers and more powerful than many laminate trimmers. This is truly a very versatile machine, with a neat compact design (overall size 94 x 190mm high) which makes it easy to handle and control, and is especially suitable for confined areas.
The machine comes with a choice of 3 bases that are simple and quick to change to suit the job you are doing, 95 x 84mm base, 133mm round base and a tilting base. For height adjustment of the cutter a lock lever releases the motor from the base allowing quick coarse adjustment; the micro fine adjuster dial can then be used to set height accurately. The quick clamp base means that the router can be used without the base and the spindle lock makes changing cutters easy. Fitted with a 1/4" collet, the 600W motor runs at 33,000rpm. Along with the 3 bases a side fence is also included; this fence can be adjusted horizontally as well as vertically for thinner work pieces. The router comes with a dust cowl sub-base with a 40mm outlet and guide handle with insulation cover for heavy use situations. Includes a great set of 4 bearing guided router cutters including 2 trimmers, 1 chamfer and an ovolo with bearing to convert to roundover cutter. This machine only accepts 1/4" collet as supplied.

I have a selection of bigger routers, and bought this little baby one specifically for free-hand routing of things like hinge and lock mortices. It has been a handy choice for the odd bit of rounding over and chamfering, but it has turned out to be a complete delight to use. It's still new to me, so I've not had time to ruin anything, and the fine adjust works really well, though another reviewer has hinted this might not last. Above all, it is a joy to control. It fits nicely in the hand, and is far easier to control accurately than any other router I have used. The clear dust-extractor base also enables you to get a clear view of what you are doing, and no sawdust collects to obscure it. I guess it's the size, weight and balance that make it "right", and it does feel "right" in my hand. That's different from others I've tried. I'd recommend this in an instant. I've got more accurate results more quickly than ever before. I'd recommend this in an instant. My one gripe is that the box is so tight there's not even room for the instructions in there. I'm going to have to look at growing into an L-Boxx version.

This router is a delight to use, and the kit comes with a range of useful extras, except it doesn't include any guide bush at all. So you have the replacement base, the screws to centre it, the rubber rings to hold it in place but no actual guide bush.
I appreciate there are different sizes available but all the other routers I have purchased, Bosch, DeWalt, Makita, Black and Decker have come with one guide bush to 'get you started'. This isn't Axminster's fault, they are only selling the product but hopefully Bosch will realise this bit of penny pinching is spoiling an otherwise brilliant little tool. Size that is! It is one powerful beast and has tackled no end of other jobs it's been asked to do.
On a positive note, the tilting base feature is a great idea. No longer do I have to create sleds to run a bit off perpendicular. And the fine depth adjustment is a dream to use.

Used for about three years - I make technical furniture for a living but it hasn't been used a huge amount and mainly for edge trimming.

The accessories are nice to have i suppose but the thing I really want is very accurate and easy depth adjustment. (This is critical for example when putting a 1mm or 3mm radius on a veneered panel).. The fine adjustment no longer works on mine so it has to be done manually - need to make sure the overcentre lock is tightened (via a small nut) else it is liable to creep and can ruin a piece - as has happened to me.. I would trade all the gadgets that come with it for a decent reliable fine depth adjustment.
My next trimmer will be Makita - which in my opinion is closer to Festool in quality.
