In Detail

N.B. Each kit is supplied as the components only and does not include the material / blank.

The 10kt Gold and Chrome Fountain Pen Kits are supplied with a German made, gold plated writing point. The writing tip assembly can be used with either a standard ink cartridge (supplied with kit) or for those who prefer to use their own choice of ink, a refillable ink reservoir (optional extra). The 24kt Fountain Pen Kit is similar to the 10kt but has a black stripe down the clip instead of the famous Artisan logo. A cap adjuster tool (210083) is recommended to aid assembly of these pen kits. Requires 10mm drill.

When using a mandrel to make these pens the 310387 Bushing Set will be required.

Very attractive pen

I have made four of these pens and find the best results using an acrylic blank. The acrylic is more durable than wood for the exposed cap end and buffs to a good gloss finish.
Yes it is a bit time consuming to fit the pen together but when it's right the two halfs go together very well. I use a small triangular file to cut the recess in the cap for the clip.

Dissappointing

Pros
Easy to prepare tube because both same size and require a standard 10mm drill
Fittings seems good quality

Cons
Not a cheap kit
End grain and tube of cap not covered on finished pen
One tube requires notching for which there is no best practice shown in the manual and it is easy to ruin the pen
Cap requires special tool to adjust for correct fitting
Personally I thing he notching and cap adjustment make the assembly of the kit too time consuming.

Would I recommend?
Whilst there is no doubt a nice pen can be produced I have looked elsewhere for fountain pen kits to produce for others. This is disappointing as Axminster is always my first port of call for tools and supplies.

Nib of pen

I have bought a few of these and they do turn out to be a really nice looking pen. I have had a few comments from a couple of friends and have noticed myself that the nib of the pen can be scratchy when using and can also leak. Any chance of possibly using a different nib with the pen kit or supply a variety of nibs to purchase from yourselves?

Excellent value and quality kit

I wrote a pen making Article for the Christmas 2009 issue of Model Engineering Workshop in which this kit featured. It is as good a writer when filled with Mont Blanc ink as my own Mont Blanc pen! To fit the cap it is worth investing in the tool offered by Axminster, this then becomes an easy task.
