I also found the plug cutter overheated badly in dried oak, such that the cut had to be made in several bites using a drill press at low speed.
It made a plug if you were careful to keep backing off from overheat, but the plug was a very loose fit in the counterbore produced by the supplied screw digger.
I also found that the screw digger was pressed to make a clean opening in my oak, picking up some of the edge.

I have reverted to the tapered plug cutter which is excellent and the TCT drill/countersink which is OK but used a Forsner drill to break the woods outside surface with a clean hole, all in the drill press.

I have experienced the same problems as Steve. One of the plug cutters works OK but the other was so blunt, it just burns a hole in the timber. On both occassions the items were used in a drill press.

Really not work considering if you plan to use them more than once or twice. I have given up with the counter sink drill bits and the plug cutters get so hot they burn the wood and blunt very quickly and that’s in a drill press going very slowly.
