Description

In Detail

The use of abrasives for sharpening hand tools is becoming increasingly popular and due to the very sharp edges produced it is often referred to as "scary sharpening". We are pleased to say that we have now sourced a very versatile and durable abrasive film which is excellent for this application. Simply peel off the backing and attach the abrasive to a known flat surface, such as piece of float glass or granite surface plate and then by using a honing guide excellent results can be obtained. The Aluminium Oxide resin bonded abrasive, which is available in a range of grits can be lubricated with either oil or water and it is also great for flattening the soles of bench planes. Makes a great non-slip surface for jig making and for sharpening carving tools, simply wrap some around a profiled block of timber and you can get a great edge on those too.

Excellent

I have a diamond stone 400/1000 a set of 4 waterstones and some wet and dry from when i started sharpening . The best edge i have got is the wet and dry stuff , so after a few months of using all 3 systems i have gone and bought myself a granite block from here and the 3 grits of this hermes lapping rolls and now im a convert to the scary sharp way of sharpening and honing . I think this stuff isthe best yet . I will use my diamond stone to take out dinks and chips but my block is set up with the 3 grits and sits on a little table right by my bench . So need an edge put on the micro bev then its 6-10 stroke on the 800 then about 6-8 strokes on the 1200 then a few more on the 2500 and im done back to work . If you want sharp tools or just starting sharpening for the first time then these and any flat surfase wiill do the job .

Very good

This abrasive film is excellent. It stays in place because of the very good adhesive backing, and the range of grits is excellent. The coarse film tunes up a primary bevel fairly quickly, but the finest grit is not fine enough for a perfect secondary bevel. However, overall this abrasive film is really good, and at £6.11 for 2.5 metres it is good value too.

Really glad I tried this

I am working my way through all my chisels and planes and discovering what really sharp means. What this highlights is the work required to flatten the rounded corners - the effects of honing the backs of blades on slightly hollow stones in the past - wish I had tried this product years ago .

excellent product, and great value for money

I bought a roll of each, with the aim of doing up and selling hand planes. But, up until now I have sharpened and polished a set of chisels. I am delighted the way they have turned out, and I find it a lot easier to use, over wet and dry, and also water stones. Being self adhesive is a big bonus, it really does stick, and stays put. I am using roughly 1 metre and find the length of working grit is perfect for sharpening. I did the bulk of the work using the three grits available and finish with a 8,000 grid stone, for the final polish. I am surprised at the relative cheap price of the rolls at £6.95
for 2.5 metres, compared to other products. As I said I have sharpened eight chisels and there is still plenty of use left in the film.
A careful clean up and dry off, leave length on the glass ready for the next time. Good value for money.

Excellent

I used the 2500 grit with the Axminister float glass and it produced a razor sharp edge. An excellent product .
