In Detail

Great for all tougher jobs, on site or in the garden. This knife has a 90mm long high carbon steel blade, easy to sharpen and takes an excellent edge. It is a very useful tool for whittling firewood, trimming Brussels sprouts or cutting open the packaging of the latest parcel to arrive from Axminster. The handle and sheath are of extra durable PP plastic. The sheath features a unique method for attaching the sheath around a button on your work clothes, which means it does not loosen, but is easy to remove. The sheath fits just as well on your belt as on your buttons. If your belt is thick, cut away the small pin on the cover.

great knife

I have three of these now, one at home, one in my tool bag, and one in my fishing gear, all keep a good edge even the one taken fishing with all the salt water, the bright orange handle is a plus whether you are on the beach or on site or in the garden nice and easy to find. highly recommended to any one who wants a cheap knife that holds a keen edge. be warned keep it in the sheath to avoid going to A&E.

follow up review

Just a quickie to update the Hultafors Craftman's Utility Knife. After six months continuous use the knife is as good today as it was the day i bought it. The carbon steel version has slight surface discolouration due to the type of work its been asked to do (and it has done some) but there is no sign of rust, which living by the sea is rare. i use a Blade-Tech pocket sharpener during jobs which after a few 'wipes' reinstates the edge superbly [take note Axminster as a possible product line!]
The orange colour of the handle was a bit shocking when i opened the box, HOWEVER, i dropped the knife in a forest valley late one evening and had no problem spotting and finding it again, so as a work knife the colour is a real asset.

If i have one gripe it would be to have a 2" work belt option [hence having to give 4 stars for features :-( ] Some of the work i do needs a wide belt so its annoying not to be able to have my trusty Hultafors at my side. Would it be possible for Axminster to influence the manufacturer on this point? There is more than enough 'meat' on the scabbard to allow for this modification AND it would also make the scabbard more secure as it is less likely to open unexpectedly with the knife in place.
That being said for a 1 1/2" belt this is one of the best utility knives on the market at a great price.

watch your fingers!

i've not been without a knife at my side or in my pockets for over 45 years when my father showed me how to sharpen one at the tender age of eight. Since then we brits have been treated to a series of mush headed politicians who have decided that we aren't to be trusted with anything sharper than a washing up brush! So having been backed into the corner of respectability in the guise of a folding Opinel i decided it was high time i took my life into my own hands again and ordered one of these little beauties. It has a fixed blade [ie doesnt fold into the handle] and as such is always ready for use. The carbon steel blade i would say is reasonably high grade judging by the quality of the edge and edge retention. BE WARNED however, it is RAZOR sharp straight out of the box! [it bit me unexpectedly and it wasnt after taking prisoners!]. Another plus is the blade width; the spine is nice and wide so there is little to no flex. A choice of colour handle would be nice, though the day glow orange means you arent going to lose it in a hurry. It would be nice to see a slightly longer version too, but all in all this a remarkable little blade at a very good price.

A hidden gem in full view

Now my preferred knife for greenwood carving and all jobs on the allotment and the great outdoors. As far as blades go this is incredible value for money. It sharpens hones and strops to a razor edge quickly and in my opion it has a better edge retention than the Mora companion. On the downside the sheath is not as good as the Mora's which has a simple hook by which it can be attached to any pair of trousers in no time, as well as a button hole suspension. If they improved the sheath and made a version with a slightly longer blade this knife would be unbeatable for the money, which admittedly it already is.
Highy recommended not just for the price.
