In Detail

You don’t have to choose between buying a surface planer or a thicknesser – with the JPT260, you can have both. JET have designed a machine that allows quick, one handed changeover between surfacing and thicknessing functions. This versatile machine features an extra large aluminum extruded fence with centered controls for quick adjustments, a built-in dust chute capable of handling both planing and jointing operations, and a powerful 1.7kW induction motor that can handle the toughest timbers. A heavy-duty, fully welded steel base cabinet houses the motor and the thicknessing table mechanism, while providing solid mounting for the associated controls and support for the surfacing tables and fence assemblies. Best of all, the fence can stay put when changing over functions. The surfacing tables are cast iron, 1,120mm long and precision planed to ensure the most accurate results. Quick adjustment of the infeed table is made possible by using an eccentric rod support. If wished the thicknessing feed rollers can be switched off. The three HSS blade cutter block results in a superior finish every time.

N.B. A 16A Plug is fitted.

Great machine

I've only had this machine a short while, but I've used it a lot already. It was easy to set up, and I am very impressed with it. The knives were already well adjusted in the cutter block, and the in-feed and out-feed tables were coplanar. The cast iron table is very robust, and the fence is enormous. I particularly like the ease of converting to thicknessing - nothing has to be removed, so the whole table top just lifts up, thereby minimising the chances of misalignment. Dust extraction (with a suitable system) is excellent, and very few chips fly around. The thicknesser table is lifted by a robust mechanism, and can be locked in place. I find the adjustment gauge is perfectly adequate for my purposes, so I don't think I'll bother with an upgrade. The whole fence (which is enormous) can be moved easily to accommodate different widths and to spread wear across the knives, but it does require checking for squareness regularly. It's a heavy machine, and realistically cannot be easily moved around the workshop. I would recommend adjustable feet to keep it stable. The cutter guard is brilliant. It does need a 16 amp socket, and just watch your knuckles on the odd sharp corner of the milled components. I've owned cheaper planer thicknessers, and they were not a patch on this Jet machine. I'm definitely pleased that I spent the money and got this model.

Recommended Buy...

Not a cheap purchase, but as with all things you get what you pay for, buy cheap then you buy twice.
This is not a light machine with an all in weight of 200+ Kgs and is constructed very well indeed using good quality heavy gauge steel and a nice overall painted finish.

The best part of this machine is the ease of going from jointing to thicknesser without the need to remove or adjust the fence a real bonus and time saver and with the free digital thickness gauge and JET mobile base this is a real bonus, one thing I will say is the jet mobile base is of a superior quality with positive wheel locks and castors.
You will need a 16A supply to run this machine.
The quality of the finished wood is excellent indeed in both soft and hard woods but an extractor is advisable as this machine churns out the shavings at a rate of knots, I have the JET DC1100a extractor with fine filter and this really does do the job.

Overall I would recommend this machine with the ease of changing modes and quality of the product.

Good for the price.

I have been using this for about two months now and it is a good quality machine for the price. The machine required some setup on delivery on the infeed table, as it wasn't coplanar with the outfeed and lower on one side than the other. Fortunately, adjustment took about 30 mins but is not covered in the manual.
The thicknesser infeed roller also seemed to be set at a very high tension on delivery and was marking the wood too much on light passes, again simply adjusted. I also purchased the digital readout and once calibrated makes setting the height accurate and very repeatable.
The switching from planing to thicknessing couldn't be easier. Dust extraction is good even with my HPLV system. The one weak point is the fence and the hinged arrangement does seem to be that well engineered. I am having to check it regularly for square as that is the main angle it is used at. The tables could have been ground to a finer finish and don't affect performance but they are rough enough to pull fibres from cleaning cloths when say applying a lubricating wax.
I originally purchased an Axminster machine of a similar specification but it was sent back and I am much happier with this Jet machine, however it was quite a bit more expensive.
The finish on hardwoods is reasonable given the feed rate on the thicknesser.

Great, but...

This planer is great for its size, and capacity. It has handled almost everything we have thrown at it, and with sharp blades chews through timber, leaving an excellent finish.

The digital (600672 analogue with numerical readout) is a must, as the included gauge is rubbish for repeat cuts.

Setting the blades is a pain, and after a year and a half of use have had to replace two of the mild steel bars that trap the blades in, and now the third one has to be replaced, as its softer than the bolts, the thread simply gets destroyed, perhaps they are being slightly overtightened but they should be able to take a fair amount of torque considering they are the only thing holding the knives in.

Great machine

Had my machine for a few weeks now and very pleased with it. Was easy to set up from packaging and did not need knives adjusting. A previous reviewer mentioned coarse milling of the thicknesser table but mine was fine. However, the planer tables do have very shallow milling lines longitudinally. These do not affect performance. The digital thickness display (600672) is great and very good value.
