In Detail

Package deal comprises the Jet JWL-1221VS Woodturning Lathe and Stand for Jet JWL-1221VS Woodturning Lathe.

Jet JWL-1221VS Woodturning Lathe
The Jet JWL1221VS is different to every other Jet lathe that has been before. The whole lathe has been designed to make the woodturning experience better by focusing on control. As with all other JET lathes, this one is made from cast iron, but the bed width is much wider than usually found on machines of this size. This gives great support to the tool rest holder, which also stays exactly where you clamp it even under the heaviest loads. The spindle is supported by heavy duty bearings and is quietly driven by a 745W DC motor via a 6 groove belt system. All of the motor controls are very conveniently located together; the speed control, spindle speed digital readout and forward/reverse selector all come naturally to hand. The tall, rigid tailstock has an ACME barrel leadscrew with 64mm of travel, the barrel and headstock spindles have 2MT tapers. Camlocks on both tailstock and toolrest holder allow easy positioning just where you want them. To help keep things tidy there are tool and cable storage fittings on the bed, keeping those essential tools within easy reach. Although this is a great bench top lathe, with the optional extension bed and matching lathe and bed stands you can expand this lathe into a floor standing machine with over 1,000mm between centres. The lathe stand has a built-in storage tray plus wide feet for stability, whilst the bed extension is an exact match to the lathe bed, giving a completely integrated look to whole machine. This is without doubt a very fine small lathe.

so far so good

Had this little beauty about 3 weeks now, I got it as an upgrade from my old 2 bed bar lathe and so far it has performed flawlessly. The build quality is great and the stability of the stand is superb. Only 2 tiny snags. the screw for top pulley cover is held in captivity with a small O ring, that falls off every time the screw is undone,a circlip would be better. Also as mentioned in another post, the speed control knob is easily moved when leaning over the bed to get at a bowl interior. I am very pleased with the lathe and anyone thinking of getting a small lathe should definitely consider this one. At the price it's unbeatable.

Impressive order fulfilment and aftersales service ...

I have for a long time had a hankering to get a woodturning lathe for my garage workshop so, recently, after a lot of research, I decided to buy from Axminster their package deal of a Jet JWL1221VS plus its stand. Here's the thing ... I placed my order on the Wednesday and the lathe was up and working in my workshop by the Friday evening; the first project being started the next morning ... I live on the Ayrshire coast in Scotland. I was super impressed with the Axminster order fulfilment service, and just as impressed with the totally solid, accurately machined, well finished, and as I now consider, high quality lathe that I received. Me being a beginner at woodturning, this lathe is just the right size and has just the right work-piece capacity and, it also has a conveniently placed control panel and range of speeds, all of which seem to have plenty of torque. Notwithstanding my admittedly limited experience in wood turning; for anyone considering buying a mid-range, home hobbyist lathe, then I am completely sincere in my recommendation of this particular machine; it appears there are many happy users of this particular lathe out there. I also highly commend Axminster for their service and support, all of which has been really top notch ... here's a bit more on their support service ...

... the one single thing that I found to be a bit questionable about the actual hardware I received -- this relates to one of the accessories supplied with the lathe and not the lathe itself -- was that, the rotatable end-cap on the supplied live centre, wasn't as firmly seated on its roller bearing as I believed it should be. I found this out when, in a small moment of forgetfulness I failed to recall that one can normally remove a live centre from a tail stock barrel by simply winding the barrel fully backwards, where instead of doing that, I lifted a long narrow drift (the one that came with the lathe) and inserted that into the rear of the tail stock; this being my simple approach to removing the live centre from the tail stock. When I did this, and since the drift had passed right through the hollow live centre and come into contact with the rear of the live centre end-cap, that end cap, after only a few easy taps, just popped off to leave the bearing itself protruding from the tail stock barrel. I commented on this by email to Axminster, and almost by return they informed me that a replacement live centre, a better one than I had originally received, was already in the post as a salve for my concern. What can I say, other than ... thank you Axminster, for this clear example of excellent customer service.

Very Versatile Strong Lathe

I have had this lathe for a little over one year. Totally reliable and I have made and sold many wood turnings, circular picture frames and pens. The bed ways are very robust and there is a wide speed change with bags of torque at low speed.
I have also made an X/Y conversion which simply clamps onto the bed ways and offers a micro controlled tool post used with a 5 inch, 3 way scroll chuck. I can convert the lathe from wood to simple metal turning in 2 minutes. Very pleased with my purchase.
