The Jet JWL-1440VS is a completely new design, but follows the principle of being an entirely mechanical variable speed lathe. The cast iron bed is a nice curved design, easy on the eye but also offering extra strength. It also has exceptionally wide slideways, ground to a super smooth surface finish. The headstock incorporates a stepless variomatic style belt drive, easily adjusted by a hand knob situated at the rear. This leaves a clean front face with nothing to get in the way of chisels when turning the back of a bowl. There is a digital spindle speed read-out for easy checking of your spindle speed. The headstock can also swivel and has seven positive locking points plus it can be positioned anywhere along the bed. The toolrest banjo has an offset tool post socket, with a double locking collar which gives extra secure clamping. The tailstock has a graduated barrel, adjusted with an ACME threaded leadscrew. Both tailstock and toolrest holders are cam locked with convenient levers, allowing quick adjustment, but secure holding.
This lathe is supplied as a bench mounted machine, but can be floor standing by using the optional cast iron leg stand. There is also a 500mm extension bed, which can be attached to the leg stand giving a bigger diameter for platter turning. This is a simple, strong, well featured lathe which would suit many woodturners at all levels. Supplied with drive centre, tailstock centre, bowl turning toolrest extension and tools.
