Description

In Detail

Socket chisels are not as common as they used to be, mainly because they are more expensive to make than the common tanged chisel of today. On the plus side they are far stronger, and the handles less likely to break than those fitted to tanged chisels, and the handles can easily be replaced. At 230mm long, these chisels from Lie-Nielsen are particularly comfortable in the hand and have excellent balance. The blades are made of A-2 Tool Steel, hardened to Rockwell 60-62, cryogenically treated and double tempered. The edges are square, parallel along the length, and very narrow so you can get into tight places. The backs are ground flat and finished by hand. The bevel is flat ground at 30°, little additional honing is required. Lie-Nielsen Chisels have Maine-harvested Hornbeam handles, not surprisingly known locally as Ironwood, and prized for its toughness. This under-utilized species makes superb chisel handles.

A fantastic chisel

I've been doing basic woodwork off and on for most of my working life, but not taken it really seriously. Recently I have been looking at improving my skills if possible. My old set of DIY shop chisels had been satisfactory, but only just. So I decided to buy a good quality chisel and bought the Lie Nielsen to see if there was a lot of difference. Indeed there was a massive difference, the new one honed to an incredible sharpness I'd never encountered before which lasted much longer. Also the tool was so much more comfortable to use. I like it so much so that I've ordered the set of 5. Can really recommend it.

1/2"Bevel Edge Socket Chisel

I agree 100% with the other reviews.
I did find I got a much sharper edge, and better polish if I stopped at a 4000 stone, rather than 6-8000 as recommended, but that could just be by make of stones

5/16 Bevel Edge Socket Chisel

I bought one of these chisels in order to cut some dovetails I needed to complete on a narrow drawer front and, as expected, I found them to be highly successful due to their superior balance and also their strength from their socket handle design. These are quality tools which will easily last a life time and I would recommend these to all who are thinking of making a purchase.
