Poor product

I have had this shredder for just over 18 months and it already needs a new baffle plate. The shredder doesn't shredder very well even before the baffle plate wore out and it jams repeatedly. I previously owned a Bosch shredder which was much better in terms of shredding but it did not last more than three years during which time the electronic circuit board had to be replaced and then the motor burnt out.

Obtaining parts for the Makita has been has been a nightmare as even Makita don't list the product on their website and when you then phone them, although they will provide the part number they refer you to a google search to obtain the part from an secondary source.

A Really Good (if Slow) Shredder

I had used an "impact" shredder for many years, until it broke! Looking for something quieter and more powerful, I chose the Makita. I have used quite a few of their power tools over the years, and I am always impressed by the build quality and reliability of their machines.
The shredder is heavy (almost all are), and fairly easy to put together. It does help if you have two people to manoeuver it as it has to be turned upside down to assemble; then turned right way up.
The principle of this shredder is a rotating blade against a fixed blade. Rather like an old-fashioned lawn mower. The rotating blade revolves slowly and the plant material is cut against the fixed blade. This means your plants are cut into about 2cm lengths. Unlike the whirling high-speed blades of an impact shredder which can produce thin slices of plant. So, it is very effective in reducing volume of plant material, perhaps not so effective at producing compost type material. The two blades can be adjusted to cut most plant material cleanly - try moving the fixed blade slowly nearer to the rotating blade until you get the cut you want.
Now, pros and cons. The pros are:
1. Very quiet (especially compared with the noise of an impact shredder).
2. Very powerful - will cope with quite thick branches.
3. Comes with an integral collecting bin - which stops mess being flung all over the place.
4. Good length of electrical cable. Easily positioned away from the house/garage.
5. You can see what is happening by looking down into the feed shute. Easily check blade cutting postion and check for clogging.
The cons are:
1. Quite slow, compared with an impact shredder. Would work better with 2 people, one cutting the material into straight lengths, and one feeding the machine.
2. The 'safety interlock' switch on the collecting bin is fiddly. Especially as the bin is made of flexible plastic.
3. Does need alternating 'soft' plant material with 'hard woody' material to help stop blades clogging.
4. No plant 'stuffer' accessory provided - but having said that, this machine does NOT lend itself to huge handfuls of plant material being stuffed into the feed shute.
5. There is a gap on the 'up' side of the rotating cutting blade. Thinner material can just drop through the gap into the collecting bin without being shredded.

Overall I am both pleased and impressed with the machine. I bought it to reduce the volume of plant waste from my garden. It does that beautifully!

Very Effective

This shredder works very well, but I've never used any others to compare the performance to. It has loads of power, and quite alarmingly pulls large branches in and chews them up. It has a safe design that would make it very difficult to get an arm chewed off by it. It's extremely large and heavy (maybe I misread the description, but I was somewhat surprised), so it's not particularly easy to move about.

One of the carrying handles is a bit flimsy, so I'm worried I might break it while trying to lift it out of the garage, but other than that it is extremely well made (though I did have a minor issue trying to fit one of the legs, as the holes didn't quite line up).

It doesn't always totally shred things - quite often chopped branches are held together by thin bits of bark, but this doesn't particularly bother me (it could be I can move the blade slightly closer, though I thought I'd got it as close as I dared without it getting fouled against the cutting plate).
