what a relief

Had one of these for several years. Finally abandoned the struggle to manage its multiple problems, aptly described by others, overcame my parsimony and bought the Veritas version. What a relief - it is well designed and made, it works simply and well once sharpened. And, at current Axminster prices, cheaper. I cannot think why anyone would buy a Dakota gauge for £28. I think I paid £12-ish; and that was way too much.

Very inaccurate micro adjustment

The threads in the micro adjustment wheel are so loose that they don't serve their purpose. Why buy this when Veritas micro adjustment with graduation is cheaper?

Not properly thought out

While I agree with Daniel Michaela that the thread is too loose, I found that the screw on the tapered part is too short and that the head binds against the brass before the screw locks on the stem. This It would not cost the manufacturer any money to do a better job. it's just a lack of thought in the design - and the fact that no one tests the design before manufacture.

Micro Adjustable Marking Guage

The big problem with this marking guage is that the thread on the micro adgustable brass section is very very loose. I bought this tool to set out fine cabinet work and found that the thread is so loose that the guage moves before you have time to lock it off, this defeats the object of having a fine adjustment tool. I found myself having to repeatedly lock the guage off, and then check the set and then adjust again and again until I got the correct set. For this reason I was not happy with the product. I have used the tite mark version of this tool, and if I had the money I would buy one of those instead as it realy is a precision tool. It is frustrating that this tool looks the part but does not perform.

Why buy any other kind?

I've tried a variety of wheel-type gauges and many suffer from movement of the head along the shaft under pressure. The V groove in this one completely prevents that which, with the micro-adjust sleeve, makes it super-accurate. I like to leave gauges set up until the end of the job to avoid errors caused by re-setting - and at this price I can afford to have enough to do that.
