Description

In Detail

If all tools were graded by their usefulness and longevity then Microplanes would be high on the list. Manufactured in the USA from high grade stainless steel, the unique Microplane manufacturing process creates hundreds of extremely sharp teeth for fast, smooth, effortless cutting. Durable, non-clogging and rustproof. Use to shape a wide variety of materials - wood, plastics, rubber, body filler, etc, etc. They can even be used to produce barley twists. Microplanes leave a good finish, requiring only a light sanding to further refine the surface.

Microplane handled rasps.

The rasp was tried immediately upon arrival on a scrap piece of quarter sawn cedar. To say that I was impressed is an understatement. In the past I have used metal rasps and files, followed by dowelling wrapped in ever finer grades of sandpaper, a most tedious way of working. This tool cut cleanly and accurately on the forward stroke and will require very little finishing. I have now ordered more. My only possible concern is the unknown rate of wear. My wife says it is a great pity they don't produce cheese graters!

Ouch

Do take care when using these exceptionally sharp tools. The top edges are just as sharp as the cutting surface so if (like me) you use it like a traditional file and guide the blade with your free hand then use good gloves - I didnt and got a nice deep cut.

Superb tool for fine woodwork and carving but treat with respect. As my carving tutor said about sharp tools "always remember these tools are not designed to cut, they are designed to cut off" - stay safe.
