Stair Builder's Guide
Stair Building is a specialized craft. A single straight flight of stairs is only a challenge the first time you do it but as soon as multiple flights, curved banisters, stringers and risers are introduced, the challenge increases markedly. The carpentry becomes secondary to the solution of complex problems of solid geometry. The great pioneer in solving these problems was Peter Nicholson, and Morris Williams' contribution was the simplification of the Nicholson approach. The most difficult part to master in stair building is the handrailing. Williams deals with it in many forms, from simple designs to large circular staircases with multiple platforms. The book, first published in 1914, is of particular value to the restoration carpenter who is faced with replacing components of the ornate staircases of another era, when such woodwork was more common. For such work, as with new construction, this book is invaluable.
