Drilled and countersunk steel plate for bench mounting Five 14g jars of carborundum in five grits
Lapping Kit
This simple kit which includes both plate and carborundum grits is the traditional Japanese way of preparing the back of a blade. The steel plate is drilled and countersunk for fixing to a bench, it is used as a bearing surface for the grit. Starting with the coarse grit, just half a teaspoon full, applying sufficient pressure and working down through successively finer grits you will be able to flatten the back of a blade until it has a fine polished surface. Prepared in this way the back will require very little further attention. The complete lapping kit consists of the steel plate which is 240 x 60 x 8mm and five 14g jars of carborundum in 90, 120, 180, 280 and 400 grits.
