Plunge saws do as their name suggests – the blade plunges through the base into the work, fully retracting into the base when not in use (unlike conventional circular saws where the blade protrudes through the base at all times).
The required blade depth is preset and the riving knife is spring supported so that it retracts into the housing automatically when the plunge is made. The saw then moves forward and the knife slips down behind the cut for safe working. The plunge saw is great for sawing apertures and complex cut-outs and allows total control when starting and ending a cut especially when combined with a guide rail.
