Metabo Professional Power Tools - to spend or not to spend? That is the question!
Only too often tools are bought to a budget without any thought being given as to just how much a tool is going to be used. Even tools that are used throughout the working day, week after week, are randomly purchased with little consideration as to how they might contribute to the profitability of "Yourself PLC".
What we are saying is that there is a place in the van for some low cost tools and even more space for the quality innovative time-saving tools that are often dismissed as being just too expensive.

Let's set out our stall as to what cost one should put on a working hour. This will of course vary if it's just you or if there are a multitude of additional bodies adding to your cost per hour on site.

One working hour on site, say £20.
An hour or less...
If time spent using the tool per year is an hour or less, then buy the cheapest option you can. Just make sure it is going to do the job.

An hour or more...
For any tool that is used for more than 20 hours a year, it is always worth buying the best that is on the market (there is a limit here) especially if the more expensive tool can complete the job quicker.

For example, let's look at an angle grinder costing £100 versus one costing £50... A low cost grinder of £50 uses the same consumables as a more expensive one, but may take 20% longer to do the task.
  Cost of Grinder £50 £100
  Consumables £50 £50
  Hours: at £20/hour 24: £480 20: £400
  Total Cost/year £580 £550
The result - a net saving of £30 and the better grinder in the bag as well.

Conclusion
Clearly if the job you need tools for is a simple one-off, then cheap is what you need. Although in the long term we should all learn to purchase the best we can afford.

However, if tools are used to earn a living and the rates which have been used here are clearly on the light side, it is easy to see that the purchase of quality tools is actually cheaper when looking at the overall cost of the job.

Many new tools are coming onto the market with added safety, reduced vibration, increased power and torque etc. All these added benefits enable the job to be done quicker in the long-run. One must not forget that innovative tools which allow the job to be done quicker and to a higher standard also add value not only in cost terms but in the quality of work done.

Remember, the cost of the work is quickly forgotten by the customer. It is how the work is done, how well it lasts and the final finish that counts.
