This bench top morticer has the huge benefit of both lateral (side to side, Y axis) and longitudinal (front to back, X axis). The workpiece is manoeuvred using a longitudinal hand wheel and lateral lever. There's no more jigging and shimming to get the mortice positioning spot on. The table and motor head run on dovetail slides and are provided with adjustable jib strips ensuring years of accurate use. A gas strut provides counterbalances the weight of the head and motor. Stops are provided for both vertical and horizontal movements for repeat work. Supplied with 3/8" chisel and bit.

Excellent machine
"'Charnwood' would have you belive theirs is the only machine with a moving table. That is not true! - the AW16BMST is far superior as the column is also dovetailed and hence solid and accurate on all axis. It is also cheaper!
Are there any niggles? Well to be very 'petty' there are the odd surface imperfections in the table casting but these are purely cosmetic and in no way affect the operation or acurracy of the machine. You could get the same issue with a machine costing hundreds more. The supplied auger was also a tad short on my version needing packing for length (superglue + small washers!) to achieve a cut. I always intended, and have subsequently purchased, some higher quality chisels anyway. I bought this for the machine quality. Highly recommended for the home or smaller business workshop.
* Tip. If you are intending to mortice longer timber buy one of their adjustable roller stands (610067) to support the long end - at 12 quid it's worth it!

This must be the best buy of all time
"I bought this machine for cutting mortices in chair frames. Once the machine is set up, cutting repeat joints is a breeze. Ideal for this sort of work and the capacity at 16mm if large enough for bigger work as well. The main parts of the machine are well made from substantial casting and it has the weight and rigidity to do a precision job (Victorian engineering comes to mind). The Bristol screws provided on the depth and side travel stops are not the best but at this price? It is also worth buying the drill chuck. Makes a nice small bench drill. It is a really excellent machine for the money."

Excellent little machine
"A solid little machine that works as it should and, with the optional drill chuck and adaptor, it has displaced my low budget pillar drill.
My three criticisms are:
The huge amount of grease put on to prevent corrosion (even on the paint work and plastic parts) - do not unpack in a wood shop, as it needs partial strip down and major degreasing before use. Still, better then arriving rusty. There was a lot of machining swarf in the chuck housing that needed to be washed out.
I will need to adjust the pillar rack and pinion at some point as the lever handle is too far back when in the fully raised position.
Overall, this did not detract from the usefulness of this machine and I would recommend it."

Very good product
"Solid, robust, powerful enough and accurate, the only criticism I can level is that it is all too easy to turn the top forward/back adjuster instead of the bottom left/right and then your setup is ruined. A simple locking mechanism would be ideal."
