Specialised axe and hatchet Blade has thinner cross section
Cleaving Axes
Although perhaps most types of axe can, at a pinch, be used for cleaving, this more specialised axe and hatchet will make the job far easier and more controllable. In cross section the blade is somewhat thinner allowing it to enter the timber with far less force and split rather than bruise or gouge out large lumps. Large logs are split by striking along the grain and then hammering in wedges to continue the 'cleave'. Smaller section logs are hit from the end. For more precise control the cleaving axe is treated as a wedge with a handle, held in position and the back, or poll, struck with a wooden mallet or maul.
