Axminster SIEG X3 Super Tilt Head Mill Drill
This is a very similar machine to the Axminster X3 but with the added benefits of a tilting head, digital spindle speed and downfeed read-outs and a thread tapping facility. As with the X3, it is a compact and well made machine which is ideal for the advanced model engineering workshop. The rectangular cast iron column, equipped with dovetail guides for the milling head, is a very substantial section and should guarantee accurate, chatter-free performance. One excellent feature of both these mills is the positioning of the vertical feed control wheel - on the base where it is easily to hand. On the X3 Super the coarse adjustment is made with this control wheel whilst the fine feed is carried our via a wheel on the head itself. The control wheels are smooth in operation and the scales are graduated in steps of 0.02mm, allowing for some very precise machining. The machine is supplied with a 1-13mm drill chuck and there is a 3MT morse taper in the quill for fitting end mill collets, milling chucks or other items of tooling. Accessories available are a cabinet stand with shelves and lockable door and a kit of clamps, nuts, studs and spacers for clamping the work to the table.

"To satisfy my curiosity, after an initial test run, I stripped the machine down to find out what makes it tick and what may cause trouble.
First the good: The machine is very well made with plenty of ground surfaces, very good fits and well finished castings. Many components are both screwed and doweled. It was not a problem to adjust the gibs to give no clearance yet smooth traverse over the whole range of travel. In use the motor speed control works well, holding the motor speed pretty constant with varying loads. The drive itself is very quiet, with a toothed belt between the motor and spindle. Now for the negative. This concerns access for lubrication of quill and other head components and vertical lead screw, as these are all well hidden, requiring removal of other parts to gain access. "
