Lie-Nielsen Bevel Edge Socket Chisel Set
The blades of these chisels from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks are forgings of A-2 tool steel with polished hornbeam handles. They have great balance, feel comfortable in the hand, and are the perfect size for cabinetmaking. Patterned after a Stanley original No.750 bevel edge socket chisel, very few toolmakers these days list socket chisels amongst their range, mainly because they are difficult to make and hence tend to be expensive to manufacture. However, socket chisels are very strong and the handles less likely to break than tanged chisels. The A-2 steel used for the blades is the very same Lie-Nielsen uses for their plane irons and treated by the exact same methods. Hardened to Rockwell 60-62, cryogenically treated and double tempered. The edges of the chisels are square, parallel along the length, and with well-angled bevels to facilitate getting into tight places. The backs are flat ground and finished by hand with 400-grit abrasive. Very little additional polishing and honing is required. The bevel is ground flat and square at 30°. Hornbeam is chosen for the handle for its toughness, which is why it is also used on high quality continental chisels and carving tools. Chisels are approximately 230mm(9") long overall. Available in a set of 5 sizes: 3mm(1/8"), 6mm(1/4"), 9.5mm(3/8"), 13mm(1/2") and 19mm(3/4") in a soft leather tool roll.
