Surprisingly Useful

Bought this thinking it might come in handy occasionally but have since found myself using it all the time. Placed on my table saw bed it is very stable and I don't need to clamp it down for most jobs. I don't have room for a normal workbench so this is a decent compromise. They could have also veneered the edges rather than leaving the mdf on view but that's a minor quibble. Recommended - I don't expect to use the vice as such, it's the ability to use bench dogs and similar (Veritas Wonder Pups for example) that I have found particularly useful.

Avoid... Poor Materials... Designs Faults Built In

Construction & materials do not justify the price!

I cannot speak for other reviewers but find it hard to believe they actually use veneered MDF on this product at that price? The worst though is that one of the less obvious but essential parts is made from pine and the way that the stresses will occur, thickness of the thinnest part, combined with the lack of consideration of growth ring / grain positioning when constructing, leaves the most vulnerable part exposed to failure. Which is how mine arrived. Sure it will get replaced but how long will it last for? When will it fail?... Hmm 10 year warranty sounds fine enough but I would rather have something which is not a failure waiting to happen.

Highly versatile workbench addition

Compared to some other Sjöbeerg's products this portable vice is minute, but that is the only difference. It's a well made item of high quality, strong and for the size very stable. Actually, it is a small worktop with a vice which is level with the surface. The 4 benchdogs allow for holding workpieces that are wider than the 110 mm jaw gap.

Attached to the kitchen worktop, it creates a temporary workbench where quite a lot - adjusting kickboards to height and length, and making a shoerack from some 20x44 stuff. On a foldable workbench, I've had no problems planing and chopping metre long boards. I have found especially useful for holding pieces during assmblies.

It is delivered flatpacked with everything needed for assembly except one item side packed. A #20 Torx bit or driver is necessary. Though perhaps most customers of this vise can be expected to have a torx driver, one should have been included given that the vise costs close to £100

Attaching this little workbench could benefit from a base plate that is larger than the work surface. It would have made clamping easier.

Useful Woodcarvers vice

I bought this vice last year after reading a review in the Woodcarving Illustrated magazine from the States.
I attend a U3A woodcarving group and as such we meet in a local community hall and work on tables with slip mats and bench hooks,. I purchased one of these vices and it proved to be very useful for relief woodcarving, it can be easily fixed to the tables without any damage to same, with the use of a couple of clamps. I personally drilled more holes in the surface of the vice so it makes it easier for different sizes and shapes of wood to be held with the bench dogs supplied. It is brilliant.

Just the job

I bought this product based on the other review. Being in a similar situation with only a small shed space to use as my workspace it seemed right.
It was right and although the limitations of the smart vice against a dedicated wood work bench are obvious I still feel that for less than £100 Its become a workhorse in its own right. I have lined the jaws with some adhesive backed cork (which to buy by the roll is only around £5!). I was really surprised how heavy the item was when it turned up, and the build quality is robust and precise. There is some basic assembly instructions to follow and It was all assembled in around 45 mins. Just spend 5 minutes looking at the diagram and lay out the contents of the box to make sure its all there and the almost wordless instructions sink in easily.
The only thing to note is: In order to screw the vice handle base plate to the front (which is the very last thing you will do) the 2 screws in the kit need a 'star shaped' screwdriver bit (which are cheap to buy and sometimes come it those screwdriver bit sets) so have one ready or the final hurdle will be a stumble ! The 4 wooden dogs seem sturdy enough to start off.

Happy as larry whoever larry is.
