We often find that students who attend our 2 day lathe course then wish to attend our 2 day milling course and vice versa. For convenience, we have therefore packaged together the Introduction to the Small Lathe and Introduction to Milling courses and are offering them as one course over four consecutive days.
Students that book this course will benefit from a great saving compared to booking both 2 day courses separately.
This intensive course, with a maximum of 5 students, will introduce you to the techniques required for an engineer's lathe and mill.
Students will receive 2 days tuition on the small lathe followed by 2 days on the small milling machine. The course content remains the same as the two individual courses we already offer.
Aimed at the complete beginner this course will take you through the setup and safe use of the lathe. Over the two days you will complete a project that incorporates a variety of techniques. From how to correctly plan a project and how to turn with precision to turning between centres and screw cutting. By the end of the two days, you will have the confidence to safely use the lathe at home.
You will embark on a two day project where you will learn a range of techniques. From calculating cutting speeds and work holding techniques to different machining methods and the use of the rotary table, you will learn all you need to confidently cut metal on the mill.
Items you take home can change depending on the resources and materials available on the day.
You will start your day with a welcome talk, including a hot drink, health and safety brief and a breakdown of the machines you will be using.
No metal working experience is needed.
The minimum age is 14 years old and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the course and must not be left unattended during class hours. If you would like to read our terms and conditions click here.
Brilliant course for a novice
I attended the 'Introduction to the Lathe and Milling Course'. It lasts for four days and for a complete novice like me, was quite intensive. I learned so much from our instructor, Bob, who seems to have infinite patience. All the staff at Axminster were friendly and welcoming, the other "students" were great and I thoroughly enjoyed the course. It has given me the confidence to tackle both basic lathe and milling tasks in connection with my hobby of railway modelling. I thoroughly recommend this course.Pete Townsend, Introduction to the Lathe and Milling Course
Excellently run, highly recommended
A full five days of hard but very enjoyable instruction and education through a very informed and positive instructor. Bob was friendly and very good at teaching his life long skills to the less informed without any hint of looking down on you for not knowing, this is the third course I have attended and every one was excellently run and the tools were plentiful and well maintained. This course and any other engineering based courses run at Axminster come highly recommended.Tony P, Engineering Course (5 day)
