Learn how to make a side table using basic woodworking tools and techniques. As an introduction to making furniture, a small side table is a good starting point. Explore the basic construction method and the strength of the mortice tenon and joint to create a beautiful table. Take the finished table home to add to your furniture and impress your family and friends.
The course will have a key focus on the use of basic woodworking tools. Across your four days, you will cover the setting up and use of these basic tools, including the hand plane, hand saw and chisels to cut and shape the components of the small side table. You will learn how to create the smooth surface of the tapered legs and how to create the top of the table using a hand plane. Furthermore, you will cover the jointing and fitting of the table top with traditional buttons. Step by step guidance will be given on how to use each hand tool, along with maintenance to keep the tools sharp and fine tuned. The beautifully finished table can be taken home with you, along with the traditional skills you'll learn throughout the course.
Items you take home can change depending on the resources and materials available on the day.
You will start your day with a welcome talk, including a hot drink, health and safety brief and a breakdown and review of the equipment you will be using.
