Exactly What I Needed

I bought this surface plate mainly for checking the flatness of small engine cylinder heads and blocks. In turn it will be used for re surfacing these parts with 400 grade wet and dry between the surface plate and the cylinder head / block (taking care not to damage the surface plate of course). I am looking for a flatness of +/- .001". This product, according to the Calibration Certificate included, gives me a flatness of +/- .00009" which is ten times more precise than I need. Excellent! Great value for the money

Cheap Plate but!

Mine had a llittle imperfection right in the middle of the plate, doesn't seem to affect use. These have no mounting feet and mine wasn't marked on the bottom with the 3 points that were used when the plate was calibrated.

Grade B? Read on ...

Mine arrived marked "Grade B" with variations marked on the calibration certificate of as much as 0.003 mm/m and a mean variation of 0.00297 mm/m. Well as I'm not measuring molecules that suits me just fine. Not even my father could work to higher tolerances and unlike me he was a proper engineer!

On a slightly more serious note I purchased this to assist in the assembly of very scale brass models where a near absolute flatness is required in order to properly square the various parts. I had been using a piece of plate glass but wasn't very happy with it. I had considered buying an iron surface plate so I could use magnets to hold various parts in place for soldering but the difficulty there is that many of the fluxes I use are highly corrosive so granite was the obvious alternative.

Having had a few parts out on it now by way of testing I can honestly say that I am perfectly satisfied with it and I have no doubt that I'll still be using it a least weekly in 20 years time.

Very useful

This has been very useful. Mine is mainly used for flattening waterstones. It comes in a wooden box with a certificate stating the tolerances a different points on the surface. Great for this price.
