Making Christmas Sleighs On The Scroll Saw With Simon Trinkwon

Our in-store scroll saw expert Simon Trinkwon will be demonstrating various techniques of scroll sawing using the Axminster Trade Series EX-16 scroll saw and show how to make a Christmas sleigh. He will run through the unique features of the EX-16 and explain the advantages of using different blades in different situations. The Axminster Trade Series EX-16 scroll saw (with 5-star reviews) has some fantastic features which make operations such as changing the blades so much quicker and easier, allowing you to spend more time perfecting your scroll saw projects.

If you're interested in learning about scroll saws and what you can achieve, or looking for a few tips and pointers, then why not pop in, get hands-on and take away with you the knowledge and techniques required to make a Christmas sleigh. We welcome Vic Tesolin from innovative Canadian hand tools manufacturer Veritas to the Sittingbourne store. Vic will be in store with us delivering a session in the Live Workshop, open to both staff and customers who are interested in the fine tools from Veritas.

Vic is a very engaging demonstrator and has a huge amount of knowledge to share. This is a great opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have and also get hands-on with tools from Veritas. Vic will be focusing on hand saws, sharpening and setting planes correctly.

Our in-store expert and Skill Centre tutor, Peter Hibbin, will demonstrate pen turning on the Axminster Trade Series Precision Pro Lathe. This is a great lathe and ideal for pen turners!

During the step-by-step demonstration, Peter will produce a range of stylish pens. He will cover material selection, drilling, gluing and finishing.

Wood Joints In Classical Japanese Architecture

Our in-store expert, Jason Bainbridge, will demonstrate how to make classical Japanese joints using Japanese hand saws and chisels.

Japanese saws are made of extremely fine steel and usually have triple ground teeth. Unlike western saws, the Japanese saw is designed to be used on the pull stroke so that the thin blade is cutting in tension. This amazingly fast method of cutting allows for near perfect control, with the ultra-thin cut giving a fast and almost effortless cutting action.

Phil Irons In Action With Woodcut Tools

Phil Irons is well known on both the UK and international woodturning scene.

He will be spending the day in store demonstrating tools from Woodcut, with whom he has a long association. His main focus will be on the Bowlsaver MAX3 - a tool which will enable you to get an increased output from a piece of wood. Phil will also be using Tru-Grind sharpening jigs and Pro-Forme hollowing tools.

By his own admission, Phil derives most pleasure and satisfaction from turning hollow forms. He has created some beautiful vases and incredible one-off masterpieces.

Phil also enjoys teaching and offers a number of courses at his workshop in Welford-on-Avon, Warwickshire. Courses range from beginners’ hobby level classes to the more advanced master classes on the lathe.
