In Detail

From Franklin of USA, described as an APP (Advanced Proprietary Polymer), Titebond III has been formulated as a dedicated wood glue to give you the ease of application of aliphatic/PVAs and the water resistance of polyurethane glues. Making an exceptionally strong bond on wood-to-wood joints, it has longer open time and higher viscosity than conventional PVAs and will maintain integrity at lower application temperatures. All of which makes for easier and less fraught assembly procedures. Polyurethane glue has undoubted flexibility of use and massive strength but is a very persistent adhesive, difficult to clean up from equipment and particularly hands. Titebond III has been designed to give you the strength of wood-to-wood bonds without the problems. It cleans up with water whilst wet, sands off without softening when fully cured, is unaffected by finishes, solvent and heat and is mildew resistant. It is suitable for interior and exterior use. Please shake bottle well before use.

Titebond III Ultimate wood glue has been independently tested for lead, cadmium and other metals under ASTM F963 and 16 CFR 1303 (total lead content). These are the testing methods specified for toy safety under the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. It has also reviewed by an independent toxicologist and conforms to ASTM D4236 for art and craft materials.

Temperature dependant. Doesn't dry clear.

Used in unheated garage in the UK in summer to laminate some well prepared pine 3 x 2s for a work bench. Nice consistency, easy to use, good open time and inital grab, easy to clean up and little to no creep. The bottle cap/nozzle is superbly designed for easy flow and does not block. This is the best glue nozzle design I've ever used by a long chalk. So it's fantastic right? Well no. Initial results seemed good but under close inspection it does not dry clear. It dries brown. Not really visible to the untrained eye but not really good enough for laminations on furniture where finish is everything. Also despite being kept clamped for at least 16 hours, I got a very slight bit of de-lamination (an inch or so) at the ends in a couple of spots. Blame my poor lamination technique if you will but the delaminations have crept another inch after this wood was left in my cold, damp garage over autumn and winter. I don't think this glue is even as waterproof as standard pva to be honest. Now here's the killer, when I tried to use this glue in my garage in autumn it would not tack or stick at all. It just turned to a white powder. It seems it's only of use to people working in heated workshops for wood that will never be subject to low temperature, dampness or humidity. So despite it's initial promise, I won't be buying it again or, indeed, using the lite or so I have left. Back to pva or onto Cascamite for me I'm afraid.

My main choice for cabinet making.

I've used this glue for quite a while now and it's never let me down, it has higher tack than PVA -so less situations where one needs cramps. The set time is a lot shorter than PVA,so make sure you've got everything to hand.

A no-brainer

If you are into any sort of timber construction where durability, strength and ease of use are important, this is the stuff to use. There are lots of lower price competitors but none have the quality of this product.

Really good

Id used this some years ago but thought Id give it another go. It is expensive but it is topnotch stuff, my solution to this is to use this for gluing up furniture, but otherwise use a cheaper PVA for less fancy stuff. It sets really nicely and rock solid so sands out well, the colour of it blends well with many timbers leaving zero glueline, but if there are any tiny gaps it blends in nicely. One of the nicest little details is the small bottles which have a really good nozzle that never clogs up, thus avoiding a common frustration of mine!

How's this for a test?

An excellent glue with a good open time for assembly and a super-strong bond once cured which is why I use it for all my handcrafted boxes. Last Christmas, two jewellery boxes were left out in heavy rain for a week after a robbery before being discovered and returned to me. I'd glued the corner joints of both boxes (one dovetailed, the other mitred) with Titebond 3 and although the suede leather interiors were ruined, testifying to the thorough soaking, all eight corners were still secure allowing me to restore the boxes. They're still intact 10 months later.
