Tools we love

Perfect partners

At Axminster, we don’t just sell tools, we love them! From our Skill Centre Tutors to our Sales Team, we asked some of our staff to pick their favourite tool for this year. If it’s not love at first sight, give them a go and you’re bound to love them too!

Staff Valentine Pick - Japanese Mitre Square
This is a great tool, accurate and made of stainless steel so it keeps nice. I use this on checking and setting my mitre trimmer together with setting out and accurately setting up the saw bench. Jason Breach (Skill Centre Tutor) - Japanese Mitre Square

Staff Valentine Pick - Dial Gauge and Stand
An essential part of any engineers tool kit and perfect for all manner of jobs, especially setting up and checking. Bob Rolph (Skill Centre Engineering Tutor) - Dial Gauge and Stand

I champion wood jaw plates wherever I go. I like using these jaws as they allow me to reverse a bowl and remove any holding method I would normally have to use. They grip a larger surface area than button jaws, and by making the jaws double plywood thickness I can create steps in the jaw, giving the capability of holding a large range of bowls. Colwin Way (Skill Centre Tutor) - Wood Jaw Plates

This solid but simple planer / thicknesser has quickly become a favorite of mine and is now a must in each of our in-store Live Workshops. The solid carbide, shear cut long life blades are the easiest blades I have come across to change. All this, plus the chunky cast iron tables and rigid fence, make this machine a pleasure to work with. Craig Steele (Axminster Store Manager) - Planer / Thicknesser

Staff Valentine Pick - New UJK Technology Pocket Hole Jig
I made a shoe rack back along, but was disappointed. I didn't think about using a pocket hole jig, as no one would have seen any fixings! I’ve got one now and my world of DIY has stepped up a league, plus I’m a convert to Torx screws, as they are so easy and precise to use! Staff Valentine Pick - Festool CXSLi 10.8
Having worked with tools all my life, it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to power tools. I’ve long been a fan of Festool and this is one of the best cordless tools I own, it’s small, compact and packed with power. 10/10 Sarah Critchard (Buyer) - Festool CXSLi 10.8

Makita Angle Grinder Inset
In all honesty these items did not impress me originally, that was until I tried them. Now I use them all the time for spraying, finishing and many more jobs - how did I ever manage without them?! Darren Windsor (Product Development) - Painters Pyramids

Painters Pyramids Inset
Having worked on the original project of creating a good plane at an affordable price, I’m perhaps a little biased. However, I do a lot of different jobs around my house and in my workshop and have no problem with using this plane. From making furniture to freeing a door, this plane never lets you down. Plus, I love that it comes with a spare blade and a storage sock too! Tim Styles (Product Development) - Rider No. 4 Smoothing Plane
