In Detail

The UJK Technology Multifunction Workbench frame is made from high quality birch plywood, chosen for its strength and stability. The outer frame is 18mm thick with a phenolic face, resistant to wear and easy to maintain. The 12mm thick birch ply inner frame is box construction ensuring that any top placed upon the frame will remain perfectly flat and not sag. There is storage in the centre of the frame for dogs, clamps and other accessories, which is accessible so long as you haven’t fixed your chosen top down. For site work and portability there are cut-outs in the frame, enabling it to fit onto a pair of Brennenstuhl trestles. Alternatively, you can build your own bench style leg stand for permanent workshop use. The front and rear aprons have plenty of Twist Dog holes for aligning workpieces vertically and cut-outs offer accessibility for clamps. Overall the frame measures 1,140mm x 750mm x 150mm, the storage recess is 275mm x 465mm x 120mm. Sold separately, the Multifunction Tops (and the Festool MFT top) drop snugly into the frame.

3rd Review -

Tim from Axminster contacted me this morning about my previous review. What an outstanding company that proactively follows up post review (never had this before) and offered to replace the unit, which I declined as work is already in progress. He did point out a download link for the plans which I will investigate further. Thank you Tim for outstanding follow-up and customer service.

2nd review in as many days

As previously stated it is to replace an old traditional (Axminster) workbench anchored to the wall. My woodworking has changed moving away from traditional wood to more man-made based materials. Track saws coupled with good dust extraction (I use a Makita TS), gives me the ability to cut and clamp various lengths true and very square. I also wished to gain more space in my limited workshop. Not needing a portable setup and not having a Festool track saw I opted for this UJK setup. While my original comments are valid I have to point out some quality issues. The top does not just 'fit' and takes some fettling - okay but today I've discovered the top does not sit flat. Using a straight edge between the two bearers, running from front to back, stand proud of the lateral bearers by quite a margin. They require planing! For a CNC machined bench I can only put it down to assembly and or lack of quality control. With hind sight I should have asked for it to be returned to Axminster, but the eyes glazed over wanting my top to sit without a hump in the middle.

They say you get what you pay for, but the stands work well and the bench is stable while being moveable when I need a little extra space. The Festool equivalent is over the top for my needs and as I say the Makita TS is very good and have owned for some years now. To say I'm disappointed is an under statement. As another reviewer pointed out - no plans for a wood based trestle.

UJK and Axminster - reputations can be won and lost on these things and it has put me off purchasing any further UJK products. Some eBay alternatives may have been a better alternative/consideration.

nearly great

In the process of changing out a very old style workbench which has seen better days and needs replacing to reflect modern ways of cutting board type materials etc to generally maximise available space. As with some other comments the top did not fit very well, concerned the amount of fettling might misalign holes on the front with the top, I carefully got it in, checked and double checked everything was aligned.

I do like the sturdiness and solid feel of the unit. This is a great opportunity for Axminster and UJK to come up with some serious accessories as this would elevate the product, subject to price, as a really serious piece of kit and as an alternative to the other well known green label range of products.

A great addition to your workshop

I have been using this top fitted with twist dog insert for a few months now. I built a stand as recommend in the literature and the system works a treat. I find it is helpful to make the stand so the bench top is about 4" higher than my normal workbench.
The precision alignment of the parf dog holes, together with stand rails that protrude to the width of the top provide great flexibility for markup a and assembly. If you are doing some messy work, gluing etc, you can place a thin ply cover over the to to protect the precision top. This way the bench will last for years. Highly recommended.

This is a great workbench

I bought this along with the parf mft top but I got to admit, I wish I had bought the twist dog version which gives you a faster and easier way to lock your bench dog just by twisting them. It's much faster and sometime, with the parf version, using the long bench dog you need to lock them in place using the clamping knobs and it might be boring after a while thought you have to reach for the dog from under the table and screw the knob in. I found this is needed only with the long bench dogs, the short one fit right in and it doesn't move.
Anyway, it's a very small problem so I'm not disappointed.
Talking about the table, very good quality, sturdy and also nice looking. The twist dog holes one the rear and front are very handy and the way talbe is constructed lets you use any clamp you have to secure the work piece just like any old classic workbench but without the need of a big vice. The top mtf is super sturdy and feature a precise grid of parf/twist dog holes that make the cutting and aligning of a work piece an easy job. It's also very plane and straight. Couldn't ask for more. I'm Very happy and the price I think is just about right.
